frosting?
I just started baking. I've been making sesame st themed cupcakes and cakes with DC. I've been mixing frosting with gel colors. I never really know which type of frosting to buy. Is there a standard for these types of cupcakes/cakes or ones that you think appeals to most people? LAst time I used vanilla I think or buttercream and this time i randomly bought a cream cheese frosting. I can't tell what I like better and am pretty indifferent.
Also, after you decorate cakes or cupcakes with a lot of frosting, where do you store it? Fridge? Counter? covered?
TIA!

Re: frosting?
Just a question- are you piping the icing onto your cupcakes or just spreading?
The flavor is really moot- it's whatever you prefer- vanilla, buttercream, cream cheese, it doesn't matter.
But I will say this, canned icing does NOT pipe well. It's softer than icing you'd make from scratch and doesn't hold a shape very well.
Icing is really easy to make though, wilton has a ton of really simple icing recipes on their site. I still use this buttercream recipe all the time! HTH!
ETA: After they are frosted, I leave them on the counter, preferably in an airtight cupcake/cake carrier. If you're using canned icing and it's very humid, you may want to keep them in the fridge.

Re: frosting?
I make my own frosting so I can't tell you what to buy, but the only frostings that need to be refrigerated are whipped cream or cream cheese based. All the others are fine wrapped with saran wrap and left on the counter.
