Just got hurt at the gym

I was in a boot camp class and my first station was burpies jumping up to a step. The step had 5 risers so it was pretty high. I was moving along ok for a bit and then between the height and the fact my sneakers were still a little wet, I went flying! I definitely pulled/tore/sprained something in my lower leg. The whole front on both sides of my calf hurts. I don't want to miss too much gym time, but I also don't want to push myself too hard and risk further injury. How long would you rest it for? Should I continue with the gym and just modify? I'm so pissed! I have been in such a great gym routine and with the synthroid I'm finally starting to lose weight.

Re: Just got hurt at the gym

First of all, you won't lose all your fitness and you won't gain weight suddenly if you are hurt, watch what you eat obviously but don't worry--all your hard work won't go down the drain. You can jump right back in if you are out a few days, I promise.

The best thing to do right now is ice--reduce any swelling. RICE is what they say---Rest, ice, compress, and elevate.

You can definitely try to modify at gym but if it hurts, STOP what you are doing. Working through a little soreness is one thing, but pushing through pain is a whole other thing. I'm an idiot and pushed through pain during the half marathon yesterday and I'm going to be paying for it severely this week.

Good luck!

Thanks Rachel! I just saw your post too, I'm sorry that you're feeling so sh!tty. I'm not much of a runner, so I don't have any great advice or you, but I just wanted to send you a Chat Icon and a Chat Icon for a speedy recovery.

Aww thank you! Good luck with your injury too! I love that I can give advice that I should be taking, ha! Well I currently am doing the "I" and icing my hamstring and calf!

That sucks!! That is one thing about bootcamp classes that I do not like, when they have you jumping up to high on the steps. I don't do them, I find a way to modify it.
I agree with the PP poster. For cardio I would try the bike since you really wont put pressure on it, stretching, maybe take some yoga or pilates classes if your gym offers it.

Re: Just got hurt at the gym

I teach dance for a living and today was not very fun. I am able to walk on it ok, but puting too much pressure on it definitely hurts. And walking up stairs isn't great either. I actually have a circular bruise on my shin. It's not filled in, just round on the outside. My friend is an ultrasound tech and I'm going to have her scan me tomorrow night to see if I tore anything. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that its just sore.Chat Icon
