Food at a party question
Having DS's party outdoors from 2-4 PM on a Sunday at a farm. Trying to figure out if I should skip the main food and just have cake/cupcakes.
Should I still do pizza and cake or just the cake?
(my worries are pizza will get cold fast and that there is so much to do the kids will just want to play and not eat)

I think there's an expectation of food and cake at a party. For a 2 hour party, 1.5 hours of play and 1/2 hour of pizza/cake is perfect.
(Why would the pizza get cold? Just have it delivered shortly before you plan to serve it!)

That's the word I was afraid of! When I get invited to a birthday party I expect a birthday party! Why do people expect food? I feel like it's going to "waste" time to do both, KWIM?

I think a birthday cake is, but I don't feel like their should always be a full meal. The party is the event happening (games & playtime), why always centered around food? Especially in a non-meal time of day
Again, not directing it personally at all. I guess I don't have the same opinions as most.

To me a party is both serving food and activities/games. I think with the time you are throwing the party you gave you could get away with no food, but I will be honest - parents do talk. We went to one party where the parents did not provide any food besides cake and every single parent that was there was talking about the host behind their back after the party (but their party was at noon so it really was worse because it was lunch time and everyone had a hungry and tired kid). So JMO I would serve something - you don't have to have a full lunch offered, but I would offer something in addition to cake like fruit. I would also specify on the invite that it is cake only so people are prepared.

I hear ya. I just feel like there are so many expectations at parties nowadays. I can't just have a few friends and call it a day. You have to invite siblings, make it a two-course meal and provide a favor! No wonder parties cost an arm and a leg :(

There is no way I would ever expect more than cake at a party with a 2-4pm time frame. All kids will have eaten lunch by then and who eats dinner at 3:30pm? That's crazy. I think you are totally fine with cake but I might do cupcakes as well so they can have "seconds."

I think as long as it make it clear on the invites that only cake is being served, you will be fine.

My kids would not be hungry for pizza at a party during that time. Especially since we would have eaten lunch around noon. They usually have a snack in between lunch and dinner, so I personally think cake is JUST fine. I would put on the invite, cake and beverages will be served. So much time is wasted eating, and at most parties we go to, the kids don't even finish one slice of pizza, and so much is wasted.

I think given the time, you can get away with no pizza. But I would offer snacks in addition to the cake. Nothing crazy, but platters of veggies, fruit kabobs, chips and dip, cheese and crackers- something along those lines. I would also make sure to have plenty of juice boxes and water for both the kids and adults.

This. Honestly, I have two kids and a very large family/circle of friends and we go to many kids birthday parties every year - like several a month - and I have only ever been to ONE kids birthday party where there was no pizza or food served (only the bday cake) and exactly what the poster above said is what happened. Right or wrong - it's just the ay it is. I would do pizza and cake if it were me and, honestly, I usually do food for the parents too so I think that is kind of the minimum these days. Again, not saying this is the "right" thing - it's just what is done in my experience.

Because of the timing of your party, you might be able to get away with just cake but I have to say that you would still need some other snacks or something besides the cake. Why not get some pizza pies and have everyone more "well fed" than just chips/pretzels/cheese and crackers? KWIM?

This. I agree with the others though if you're not going to serve food, I would mention it on the invite. I also agree that you should have some snacks besides cake, even if you're not going to serve pizza.

We are having a party at a gymnastics place this year. Usually I have them at home and have a ton of food, but I have space and and oven and as much time as I want for a party.
This year I decided to go lighter since it is out. No hot food except a big tray of baked ziti or a crock pot of something similar, just a few platters of mini croissant sandwiches, fruit platters, chips, dips and a few dessert choices (cake, cookies, brownies).
I figure the food is mostly for the parents since the kids will be occupied until we sit down for cake.
