Re: Bethpage
The nicer areas are probably the ones closer to Plainview / Old Bethpage since you will be further away from the LIRR.
There is a small "town" with stores near BK Sweeneys, but a lot of the stores have been closed. I wouldn't call it much of a town unfortunately.

Re: Bethpage
I've sold several homes in Bethpage; I know the area. It doesn't really have a "village" area the way some other towns do.
I do think it's a great area, though -- very convenient and a lot of nice neighborhoods.
Just be aware that down by Hempstead Turnpike (between Wantagh Ave and Hicksville Road) is an area of Bethpage called Hahn Estates. That is Town of Hempstead and Island Trees schools. The rest of Bethpage is Town of Oyster Bay. There is also an area of Bethpage that is zoned for Plainedge schools. So if it is the school district (Bethpage) that interests you, make sure you pay attention to that and don't assume Bethpage automatically equals Bethpage schools.
If you want Bethpage schools, there are areas of Plainview, and also a small piece of Hicksville, that are zoned for Bethpage school district (SD 21).

I'm close to the Plainview border and really like it. There isn't a main street really but the stores in Plainview are great. Lots of choices for grocery and speciality stores.

Re: Bethpage
Check City data forums for tons of Bethpage posts. Watch out for the environmental sites - there are a number of toxic areas where the water is questionable so you want to steer clear of those sections which may pose health risks. Newsday and News12 are doing a "whats in your water" special this week which mentions the toxic waste dumps and troubling nitrogen levels in Long Islands water supply.
Here is what is listed for Bethpage on the Superfund link from Newsday:
Claremont Poly Chemical Corp 505 Winding Road, Old Bethpage
Nassau County Fire Training Center 300 Winding Rd, Old Bethpage
All the Northrup Grumman Facilities: - main Bethpage facility - 830 S. Oyster Bay Rd -Steel Los Plant 2 - 700 Hickville Road
Old Bethpage Landfull Bethpage-Sweethollow Road
Naval Weapons Ind. Reserve Plant S. Oyster Bay Road Bethpage

We live in Bethpage and love it! Schools are top notch. Infact, my son's school just got a federal Blue Ribbon award. There is not much of a downtown area but a cluster of shops near the RR and another cluster on Rte 24. The only areas I would avoid would be the numbered streets and only becoz of environmental concerns from the waste from Grumman. Note that the water is safe to drink as it is extensively purified to much higher standards than set by NY state. The houses north of the HS are bigger and more expensive. But plenty of other areas that are affordable and the taxes are manageable. FM for for more details

mnm918, If you haven't heard already, it is Kramer Lane. Hooray! Also, I wanted to clarify, drinking water all over Bethpage is fine. It all comes from the same purifying plant. My concern with the numbered streets is with some chemicals leaching from the plume into the soil. Though they do say the plume is moving way below ground not in the shovel digging range.
