Just knowing classifications doesn't tell you much about the children. 2 children can be labeled as Speech and Language Impaired but present as very different, just as a child labeled learning disabled will look different across the board. Your best bet is to get into the classrooms that are your options and see what you think and what you think will best fit the needs of your daughter. Good luck!Chat Icon

Re: Recently diagnosed with Adhd

I would get a parent advocate. Also I believe that if you are zoned in a school district that cannot supply you with the appropriate setting, they must bus her to a school that has the setting. For example if you want her in an inclusion class, but the elementary school your zoned for does not have it, but another elementary school in the district does, then I believe they must bus her there. I know this happened for another parent I know in another district on Long Island. But either way I would ask to see each classroom in action and speak to the teachers in the class.

Re: Recently diagnosed with Adhd update one year later 9/10/14

There is light at the end of the tunnel. My daughter last year went through so much. Today my daughter is back on track thanks to little village. My daughter is currently attending little Little Village. She is not demonstrating any behavior issues. We removed the Bip . They are so positive. She currently placed in their 12:1:4 class setting. I was a little nervous I must admit. They have put my nerves at ease. They have called me everyday and let me know how my daughter is doing. After 11 month battle with my school district my daughter finally is feeling good about her self. Last year this time she was in kindergarten and it was the worst experience my daughter had. she when to two different schools and three different classes. She started out in a charter school in a mainstream class setting and was sent home at least 10x. I was devastated and put her back in the district and the battle began. I was not sure at the time why my daughter was having behavior issues and I took her to every specialist. She first was diagnosed with Adhd. I knew that was not correct and I discovered she had sensory issues which was causing her to have behavior issues. Once I treated her sensory issues. She was a different child by then I had no choice but to put her in a self contained class setting 15:1:1 with an aide. It hurt my heart because now she is in most restrictive class setting. Before she entered kindergarten she was in a integrated class setting 15:1:2. She was a thriving child that had socially regress and at this point was misunderstood. If I could undo a year ago I wish I was wiser I did not know my child and left it up to my school district to make a decision what placement she would received.
Today, I learned so much in my journey in advocating for my daughter go with your gut when district tell you no. You fight hard for your child and never give up. My daughter was born at 29 weeks and 5 days weighing only 2lbs. She is a bright little girl that has wrinkles that need to be iron out(services). I spent many nights of crying and thanks to this Facebook page it helped me out a great deal. It was one of the toughest decision I had to make when we decided to place her out district. I knew my district could not get her to thrive like Marcus Ave school did from age 3-5. So when my district gave us the okay to look for a private school that deals with language this was difficult task. I was concerned that my daughter would not be around children where she could model and she is very highly functioning she is above two grade levels in reading but yet she has a lot of deficits. I could have kept her in her district but I live in Hempstead it is the worst SD a child can go to especially a child with wrinkles. All I can say that Little Village have put my mind at ease and finally I feel like I am at peace. There staff is great and although I know this a temporary solution that my daughter will only be here for one year. I know that they are dedicated in making sure my daughter's experience will be a great one. I wishing every body a great school 2014-2015 school year.
