WWYD? Long..

This is more of a pre emptive question - Out cat is 9 y/o. She's always had persistent herpes fare ups in her eyes, the worse eye is her left one. 3 years ago upon returning from our 14 day honeymoon her eye was a mess - she is highly suspectible to stress and us being away seemed to be too much. She ended up getting cornea surgery which was a big deal but seemed to help. Over the years we've found that getting treatment for infections seem to stress her out more, and usually if we just let it be it resolves.

Fastforward - 4 months ago we moved into a new house and had a baby, major stress for all of us! As a distracted new mother I wasn't as obseverant as usual and saw last week that her "good" eye was a mess. Brought her to the vet on Fri and she has severe ulcers in her eye. She is currently on a eye drop, 2 liquid oral meds and 2 pills 2 times a day - imagine how stressed she is now! DH and I were talking about her possibly needing surgery again, and were really thinking if we would put her through that again. She doesn't seem to be in pain and is eating and acting normal. I think without surgery she could go blind, or would need the eye removed.

I guess I'm just wondering if surgery would help, and it has in some ways for her other eye, would we be terrible to not do it again? I just wonder about quality of life and puttng her through another surgery.

I go back to the vet on Fri to see how it has progressed. If it hasn't much I may request a extra week of meds before we see the surgeon. I just feel bad for her!

i am sorry about your cat.

maybe just wait it out if she is not in pain. Maybe all the stress might take a little longer than normal for it to clear up. If she was scratching, hissing and was uncomfortable than I would try the surgery.

i hope she gets better by the time she goes to the vet.

I have a cat with cat herpes, but it's a mild case. It waters with stress. I have heard L-Lysine is a good vitamin to add to the food. Also try Feliway (My God, I sound like a Feliway sales person these days) or Rescue Remedy.

Also what kind of food are you feeding your cat? You want to build up the immune system to help against stress. Wet food is best.

My cat gets stressed if I move a piece of furniture, but I just use Feliway and Rescue Remedy with lots of attention. L-Lysine isn't needed because her Herpes seems to be mild.

Thanks for the feedback! We defintely should have put measures in place to reduce the stress of moving and the baby - it happened to happen on the same weekend though LOL Wish I would have had the feliway before hand...

The doctor really thinks surgery is the way to go - but either way she'll have extensive scarring. I requested another few weeks of meds, since she really doesn't appear to be in pain. I give the lysine and she gets one can of wet food a day.

Going back in a week - hoping it gets better!
