Night running

Anyone do this? I'm trying to figure out when I can schedule my long runs in and the only possible day would be Sunday early mornings. Being that I'm shooting for a half marathon in the Spring, I need to start training and I prefer to run outside over the treadmill. Treadmill is just so BORING.

If you do run at night where do you run-your neighborhood, park? What do you wear on your body- reflective vest, something on your shoes, or nothing? Do you wear a light on your head?

I ran at night a couple of times in a park in the evening and I was a little scared. I kept looking behind me and held my key while I ran the entire time.

I might have a running partner so that would be great. But still, two women running alone...

Night running

If I had a running partner, I would have no problem running anywhere within reason. Alone, I run on the street but would not do a park. I live in LB, and won't do the boardwalk at night in the winter (in the summer, it is crowded enough that I feel safe).
I try to wear reflective stuff (pants with reflective tape on them) and bright colored tops, but no lights, and honestly, I don't think too much about it-- I am just super careful about crossing streets. No light, we have plenty of street lights.
Also make sure to carry your phone just in case.

Night running

Irun at night in very bright clothes I run on the street only. And along busier roads. Not in random neighborhoods.

Re: Night running

I run in the dark all the time since I go at 5am, sometimes earlier. If I'm by myself, I try to loop my neighborhood - I have a 2.25 mile loop that I repeat or if it's a shorter run, I just go around my street which is close to a mile around. A few days a week I run with a friend so we venture out more around town. I wear reflective clothing and do not wear headphones so I can hear what is going on around me. Honestly, I'm more afraid of a dog chasing me than a person. To lilqtny's point, I avoid "random" neighborhoods and stick to my own or go on the busy streets. I find weekday mornings are safe because you have a lot of people out who are going to work as opposed to random people walking the streets. Also, don't ever assume cars see you - especially during early morning when they might not be expecting to see someone out, people are not looking in all directions. Make eye contact and make sure they are waving you on to go...

Night running

i love running on the streets in my neighborhood. i've had to stop because of IT band issues on my right knee.

when i used to run at night...
i would wear a reflective vest and a head lamp.
my son has the reflective vest as well, but no head lamp.

i've seriously started to think about taking self-defense classes for when my running buddy joins the marines and doesn't run with me any more. in the meantime, i run with my pitbull. people tend to keep their distance when you have 65lbs of pure muscle on a leash... little do they know that all she wants to do is sit on their lap and love them lol

Re: Night running

Thanks for all the suggestions. Now my main problem is how on earth do I get my arse out of bed at 5am? I barely get out during the week at 545 when I should and instead get up at 6 running around like a chicken with hits head cut off.
How do you do it? I'm thinking if I sign up for a half now, that will push me to get up. But work never pushes me to get up when I should so what to do... Chat Icon

4 in the morning is when the alarm goes off for me. If I don't run first thing in the morning, the rest of the day just goes by too fast and there is NO other time I can fit it in. I wear a reflective vest.

Ugh... I feel your pain. I run at night (btwn 9 and 10) after both kids are in bed. No fun to get out there no matter what time!

for some reason i am too scared to run in the dark in the AM because the streets are so quite but will go as late as 9 at night when lots of cars and people still awake. I have a loop i run on the busier streets in town and wear reflectors and a flashing light on my back.

This is what happens to me especially on the weekends. If I don't start early, I find something else that must get done that day and before I know it it's late night and I don't want to move. So I either do the long runs in the early am of the weekend, or during the week at night right after dropping kids off or if they are with DH. If I make it home, it's over for me.
