Has anyone been borderline diabetic?
I got blood work results, Hemoglobin a1c, and they are borderline diabetic. I am not trying to put my head in the sand, but I am very thin and rarely eat sweets. I have also been using my vitamix making fruit/veggi drinks. I do eat carbs. I did have testing years back that I had a hemoglobin variant and I am reading that could cause a test for this to be high, but anyone have blood work come up like this? I am shocked and a bit concerned.

Re: Has anyone been borderline diabetic?
It could be a variety of factors, genetics, eating habits, age..
First keep a food journal to see what your eating. Yes, fruits are good but have high sugars in them. Carbs convert to sugar for diabetics. Did you tell your dr about the hemoglobin variant? See what he/she says.
Anyone in your family have diabetes? Also 40 and older has a higher increase. What was your number for the A1c test?

Re: Has anyone been borderline diabetic?
Thanks. The number was 5.8. I only read about the hemoglobin variant effecting test after speaking to dr's office. I have follow up in a few weeks so I have paperwork with my results of that and what I read online.

Re: Has anyone been borderline diabetic?
Just found out today my A1C is 5.7.
I am not over weight and am on a Gluten, Dairy and night shade free diet.
I don't know what I'm doing wrong.
I have an appointment with an Endocrinologist in 2 weeks.

OMG...can't believe I posted this and you got results today! I am at a loss with the way I eat, not much snacking, no soda. My DH thinks the test is wrong. So sorry you are going through this too.
Did you make an appointment with endocrinologist on your own or did the dr advise you to do it?

Re: Has anyone been borderline diabetic?
I made the appointment myself. I already see an Endo once a year for my thyroid.
Not only was my A1C high, but the said my glucose level was very low at 54. Very confusing.
I go to Dr Karen Schwartz in Woodbury. I really like her.

Thank you for the info. I wasn't expecting this when I went for bloodwork. Got the call yesterday and very confused how this could be. Please let me know how you make out.

Re: Has anyone been borderline diabetic?
I was, but I was also overweight. When I started tracking my foods & watching my carb add exercising I lost weight & also removed the borderline diabetic diagnosis. I have a family history of type II diabetes and also had gestational diabetes when PG, so I'm more prone to this diagnosis unfortunately.

Has anyone been borderline diabetic?
I know many people who are thin, eat healthy, etc. who are diagnosed w/ diabetes. It's not just for fat people who eat junk.

Yes. A lot has to do with genetic factors that you cannot control at all. There are different types of diabetes too- some that are contributed to diet and weight and others that are totally unrelated to diet. That's why everyone should get tested for it- not just those with poor diets or who are overweight.

Re: Has anyone been borderline diabetic?
ALL people are potentially Type II diabetic. Any individual pancreas can only support X lbs of body mass. For the majority of people, that X is several hundred pounds, but you will eventually reach it. Unfortunately, for some people, that X is less than they currently weigh, regardless of how much they actually weigh. You can be underweight, and still be diabetic, only because your pancreas can only support 40 lbs of body mass.
Luckily for me, I am 100% immune from getting Type II diabetes.... ....
Type I diabetics can't get that, by definition....

A1C is an average. Bloodwork is a snapshot.
The average of 0,50, and 100 is 50, but a snapshot of those numbers could be 0.
Everyone's blood sugar level fluctuates during the day. Yours may be fluctuating higher and lower than it should be, so your average A1C could be perfect, but your swings are out of normal.

exactly- I got type 1 at 34- I have never been over weight - it has nothing to do with what you eat-
