Question: between counties

Just an interesting observation of mine from this snowstorm alone. I am in Western Suffolk/Town of Babylon. DH's parents are in Seaford.

We just took a ride over there to shovel them out. I noticed that by us, the main road is pretty much completely cleared off down to the pavement.

Definitely not the case as you swing over into Massapequa into Seaford.

I also know that Nassau the taxes are often much higher than by us, and people are boasting about what "desirable areas" they are.

I remember the roads being similar last year.

I'm not looking to get into a pissing match at all about neighborhoods, especially ones I don't actually live in, but it kinda made me proud to actually be a Suffolk resident.

Are there other differences you notice between the counties?

Either positive or negative?

Question: between counties

I live in Westchester county- this is my first winter living here both DH and I are impressed with how fast the City of White Plains cleared the snow. Our street was plowed last night and this morning. DH was shocked that our regularly schedule garbage pick up took place today. We lived on City Island for the past several winters and we were usually the last ones plowed. My taxes are not cheap but I feel like I am getting my monies worth.

Re: Question: between counties

Do you mean differences in terms of snow removal or just differences in general?

In general, I think that Long Island is really divided into fours. I think you have Western Nassau that's like Queens, Central and Eastern Nassau that are probably the true definition of suburban, Western and Central Suffolk that are suburban with a bit more space, and rural Eastern Suffolk.

I think these terms are probably subjective though. To me, many areas of Eastern Suffolk are rural, but to someone in rural PA, they are probably suburban.

ETA: These are, to me, not positive/negative distinctions. Everyone has a different preference when it comes to urban/suburban/rural/any combination of these/etc.

Question: between counties

I think when comparing things like snow removal and stuff like that, there's more of a difference between the Towns (i.e. Town of Brookhaven vs. Town of Babylon vs. Town of Hempstead) than by county.

Gotcha.

That could be it too.

Yeah, I pretty much know the differences amongst the different areas in terms of population and such.

I'm originally from the Hudson Valley so "out east" doesn't feel as rural to me either, but I think there are definite differences in way of life for many depending on where you live on Long Island.

Question: between counties

I literally live on the Nassau suffolk border. Its less than 100 feet from my house. I see both side as I pay town of babylon taxes but Farmingdale School taxes. I have def seen it with the snow plowing. IMO TOB is better than Farmingdale village. you literally see the road change as you driving down the street. I also have noticed with trash collection in my area.

I am in Town of Brookhaven on the North Shore and I pay about $10k in taxes per year, and the main roads are fine. Residential roads, even heavily traveled ones, are still in rough shape.

I was going to say the same thing. I live in Commack and noticed after the big storm last year, heading east on 347 that as soon as we entered a different town, the condition of the roads changed dramatically.

Yup! Town of Brookhaven REALLY dropped the ball. DH and i haven't left the house since Thursday night so when we go out in a little while, I'll see how it is. My street is a somewhat busier side street and is supposedly an emergency route but from my window looks horrendous.

This! I am also mere feet away from the boarder. I was out today & was Chat Icon at how suddenly the quality of the roads changed. There was a definite difference in the village vs. TOB vs. ToOB.
