Insurance Coverage for Basement Floods
A friend of mine had her basement entirely flooded after a frozen pipe burst with last week's temps. I know homeowner's insurance notoriously does not cover floods but does flood insurance cover non-storm related floods? Meaning, not from a hurricane or severe storm. Basements floods are so common (especially here on LI), I'm wondering how to best protect ourselves.

Insurance Coverage for Basement Floods
Usually, if the water comes from inside the house (like a burst pipe) then there will be coverage. Depending upon what coverage she purchased, certain things may not be covered but it should be a covered loss (as opposed to a flooded basement where the water came from outside the house - through a crack or a window - which would not generally be covered). Re: Insurance Coverage for Basement Floods
Between both the basics should be covered.
But like the PP mentioned, not everything will be.......so like, if you spent thousands making the basement into this gorgeous new room, the insurance may only cover things like a new boiler/water heater and washer/dryer.
This is how my agent at State Farm explained it to me.
We will never renovate our basement because of this not to mention the fact that we were already hit once and put out of our home by Sandy.
