rug in dining room
I have wood throughout my dinging and living room (Open layout) and I have a rug under the dining table and a separate one under the living room seating.
They are different but similar.

Re: rug in dining room
Huge yay for me. I love it - I think it really warms up the space and makes it feel cozy.
It must be big enough that if you push your chair back from the table you're still on the rug.

This is what I have. My living room and dining room are separate rooms, but open to each other. I have hardwood flooring and area rugs underneath the dining room table and in the living room. They are different colors and slightly different patterns, but similar patterns and the same traditional style.
Personally, I think an area rug helps "ground" the dining space, so I like the look of a rug under the table, esp. if you have more traditional furnishings (e.g., wood). If you had a lot of glass, more contemporary streamlined look, then I wouldn't necessarily do a rug.

Re: rug in dining room
I like the look of it, especially if you been to show rate a large open space. On the flip side, we eat at our dining rabid every day and my kids are slobs, I would never get a rug until they're a lot older.
