Rug under dining room table... yay or nay?

DH and I go back and forth on this a lot. Some days we like it without and some days we say, we should get a rug here. What do you think?

Here is our dining area... it's attached to the living room and there's a rug in there.

(we actually have table long way now... and sometimes leave it opened up in a square)






Do you think the 2 rugs would be too close to eachother?

I think a rug would look nice under your table. We don't have one under ours because it would look weird in our dining room and I'm afraid of spilling something on it.

while I think it would great, I HATE rugs under tables when you are trying to move the chairs. they don't slide, so my vote would be no. if you do go with one, I would do something with a very low pile or even something woven like a sisal type rug, and they usually have nice boarders around them to frame the whole area.

i think it looks great without a rug so i don't think you *need* one...

you have a space like mine, with the the living-dining combo and i can't fit a rug under my table b/c they don't make rugs in a size that would fit the dining side of the room and my table perfectly. i rather have no rug than a rug that looks "off"...but if you can find one that fits your space and table i think it would nice, but i don't think you have to have one - the room doesnt' look naked without it IMO...

I go back and forth too but, I decided to leave it without. I cant be bothered vac'ing the crumbs and moving all of the chairs. Besides that I think it makes the room look smaller and I would have to get a 7x10 or larger so the chairs are still on the rug when pulled away from the table. I hate when the front legs are on and the back are off.

I say no, because I have two kids - it is so easy to clean the wood floor or tile

we had one and loved it - my puppy used it as a wee wee pad though so we had to get rid of it and actually like it better without

I say yay - I love the look of a rug under the DR table.

I say no. The rug in your living room looks great and since you don't have one in the dining area it makes that one stand out even more. Also I hate rugs under tables where you eat they get messy quickly.

I have to vote no. The one you have in the living room is so pretty and the table is pretty close to the living room area, so I don't think it's necessary.

Plus, your floors are gorgeous!

I say nay. Don't think you need it. Your floors are gorgous & its not as easy to clean up spills on a rug.

It's a little "cold" without a rug...so, yes, I would personally add one.

i say yes! it warms it up

Im getting one soon for ours.

Im finding that with the cat especially the hair is floating around under there and no matter what I do it flies around. I think it will be easier to vaccuum.

nah..... the chairs get caught.

Practically speaking, chairs get caught when the rug is not big enough and the chair falls onto the wood. However, as a decorative look, I like how a rug defines a space and gives the room a polished look. I think whether to have a rug or not depends upon how you use the space, if you have kids or pets and what look you want to achieve.

If the space is mostly for show, then I would get a rug. If this is your primary place to eat, it's a toss up for me. If you have kids or pets get something easily cleanable.

I say add a rug! It is such a nice look! I love your house!! I have a rug under my dining room rug and my set up is similar to yours. I got the same rug for the dining and living room but I dont think you have too.

I really like the look without but I would get a rug (maybe if you can find a thin bamboo one or something so that you don't ruin your floors. Sometimes laminate floors "dent" easily with weight on them.

We have an open floor plan and got matching rugs for LV and DR and a runner too.

If you can get one to match--maybe one of the colors in the LR carpet I would say yay--but it looks great without, love your floors

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm leaning more towards no rug, but I can see how it could warm up that area. Plus, we still need decor for that stupid cut out on the wall (but that's a a separate post!). If we do get one, probably do a solid color since the LR rug has a pattern. We're going to look around this weekend.
