Question about volunteering

Since we aren't ready for a new dog yet, I think I would like to volunteer at a shelter walking dogs. But with a job and two kids, my free time is somewhat limited. Is there a minimum of hours you need to volunteer? I was thinking I could do it Thursdays when DS is in preschool for 2 hours and then possibly on the weekends when we don't have a million parties to attend. Is that enough?

Question about volunteering

I volunteer at the New Rochelle Humane society and they do not have any minimum requirements aside from required orientation. They also have a family volunteer program.

Re: Question about volunteering

I'm thinking of doing it at Pets Alive in Elmsford. They also allow children. So after I do the orientation and get a feel for the shelter, I think I would like to make it a family thing and have my boys help out as well.

How many hours a week do you volunteer? Do you have a set "schedule" or do you just show up when you have free time?

Re: Question about volunteering

There is not set schedule for volunteers-they ask each volunteer to track their hours on an index card that is kept in a box in the lobby. You can come and go as you please. It is a really laid back environment and the staff and other volunteers are great! Right now I have not been volunteering much since I am nearly 34 weeks pregnant.

The best part about New Rochelle is they actually have a training program for their dogs- the goal is to train the volunteers to train the dogs to make them more adoptable. They let the volunteers choose how involved they want to be in the program- if you want to spend a few hours a week walking the well mannered dogs- great if you want to invest the time to learn how to work with the more challenging dogs they will provide training and support.

Re: Question about volunteering

That sounds great. I like that the Elmsford shelter is only about 10 minutes from my house. And most important, it's a no kill shelter. I know from the website that they offer training classes too. I'm going to attend the nanda tort volunteer training session on Saturday and hopefully that will address any other questions I have. Thanks!

Question about volunteering

Good luck! Most of the area shelters are no kill or at least no kill just because of space- I do not know too much about the Elmsford shelter but I love volunteering at the animal shelter- it has been a very fulfilling experience.
