Pre-K Questions

Hi Everyone!

DS just turned 4 (12/21) and is moving to the pre-k class this week at daycare (just him and another child who turned 4 this month - the rest of the class are kids who are turning 5 and heading to K next year).

I was just curious as to what types of things are learned/should be learned in Pre-K? I am debating doing the local lottery for our town as well (which daycare isn't a part of) so I wanted to make sure that the Pre-K program there is comparable to other Pre-K programs.

Pre-K Questions

Write their name, shapes, colors, numbers, letters, days of the week. There was story time, weather board,snack & projects. My D went everyday 9am-11:30am thru our school district. I found it helped her tremendously.

We opted to go through the district and I'm happy with our choice.

I don't have to pay out of pocket like we would if he continued on in the Catholic school he was originally enrolled in for nursery.

(We just pay for pre-care by the day we use).

Since we plan to go the public school route right now, it also made the most sense so he can start to meet other kids who will probably be in his school or maybe even his class.

He is definitely learning tons and I think it's definitely helped with his maturity level. Also being in school each morning gives my ILs a break since they watch him while I'm at work.

It also has motivated me to really care about my district and what goes on. DH and I will probably join the PTA next year and DH is also considering coaching little league.


Lastly, I don't know how much I put into this statement, especially because of all the changes in education going on, but at the parent teacher orientation everyone was told that by the time kids enroll in K, they should be on a 1st and often 2nd grade level as compared to back when we were all in school.

From teachers I have talked to though, as long as they know the basics and are reading ready, they should be fine come K.

Pre-K Questions

Thanks - it sounds like he's learning the appropriate things in his daycare pre-k.

Our UPK program is run through the county and there are only 27 slots given to residents in our town. The program is through three nursery schools and there is no guarantee he'll be with kids he will be going to elementary school with (or even in the district since we are close to the edge of the district). The daycare he's currently in is in our town and he has at least 2 friends entering K with him so I'm not as worried about him meeting other kids he will go to school with.

I will still have to pay a decent chunk of change since he will be taken by van to and from regular daycare - I will pay less for daycare overall since he won't be there a full day but, I don't know how substantial it will be (there is no aftercare option).
