Cost to refinish basement- yourself....
If you refinished your basement using no contractors (or minimal use of contractors) how much did you end up spending approx? Also what kind of things did you do ie add a bathroom, make multiple rooms etc?
We have a large basement (approx 1500 sf) I want to refinish about 700 of it for a play room, family space.....Just trying to figure out approx cost. My DH, FIL and Dad could do the work.
Weighing a new basement vs a new master bath...lol
Thanks@

I cant help but i am very interested to hear the answers. We are starting ours soon. 1,300 sq ft. We are putting in a bathroom, bedroom, playroom and mancave. Our friend is doing the plumbing so no cost for labor and my husband is in construction so apart from paying some laborers we will only have to buy some material. We will get most very cheap as we both work in the business. DH thinks we can do it for about $10K. I hope so too.

Re: Cost to refinish basement- yourself....
We paid about $11k to finish about 800sq ft of our basement. We only hired out drywall taping. FIL, DH and myself did everything else. FIL was a general contractor for years in another state - so no connections here for supplies, etc. DH is awesome at electric work, and he wired a home theater and did all the can lights.
We have a historically dry basement but we used mildew resistant sheetrock and carpet pad just in case, which increased the cost significantly. We didn't go nuts on the carpet - commercial carpet for about $0.98 sq ft. We get so many compliments on the carpet. We love our basement, best money ever spent! I'm in it right now!

About $12k. Gutted, put up insulation, sheetrock, ceiling, heat, put stairs in, moved boiler and washer, dryer. Carpet downstairs and on stairs. Also added banister so that basement is kind of open to the rest of the house

Re: Cost to refinish basement- yourself....
I think we spent $14,000 and we hired someone. The only thing we did was paint. They needed to add insulation (the room was previously our two car garage), built one large playroom, two storage closets (one for us, one for toys), made closets around the utilities (electric box, water), raised the floor and put down subfloor, added a half bath (used leftover tile from our kitchen, we bought sink and toilet). The price included all of the labor, materials, electric work and plumber. So I think if you're doing the work, you should definitely be able to do it under $10,000.

Re: Cost to refinish basement- yourself....
We're in the middle of it now so as far as pricing I can't say yet. Right now the one side of our basement is completely gutted. The other side we re-did about 2 years ago.
DH has to put up the framing then insulate, move some piping etc etc. it will be a spare bedroom and a full bathroom.
If Anything We may hire a taper since it's the most tedious and takes the most time. But the rest we do ourselves.

Cost to refinish basement- yourself....
DH turned our cellar into a basement 4 years ago - framed, insulated, sheet rocked, taped, spackled, drop ceiling, carpet def under 10k. We did hire out for electric, carpet, taping but it was still under 10k w materials. We built 3 closets and had to work around our boiler (in the middle of he basement). However it is a small area 600sf

Re: Cost to refinish basement- yourself....
We have 400 sq ft basement, and we re-did everything new insulation, electrical, re-run of HVAC, tile floor and new ceiling and walls. My husband did most of the work, but we hired someone to do the Sheetrock, spackeling, and sanding. Overall it cost us $3k.
We are also gonna be renovating the half bath downstairs which will cost us $1800 just for plumbing + tile.

Re: Cost to refinish basement- yourself....
DH and my dad finished our condo basement themselves and spent about $3,500. It included insulation, studding, sheetrock, molding, electric, painting, building closets and new carpet. Very basic... we didn't create rooms and there is no bathroom.

Hi, if you don't mind, can you let me know who you used? We need to do the same work in our basement.

Unfortunately I'm in Westchester and the company is doing more corporate constructions now, so I don't think that will work.
