Re: Please recommend your favorite town to live
I grew up in Lindenhurst and loved it there. Small town feel, we all knew everyone, and you couldnt get away with anything bc by the time I got home my mom already knew! LOL My dad has lived there since he was 14 and is now 75 so I guess thats part of it too! But as a kid we used to ride our bikes to ventian shores, they had lots of town activities and fairs it just always felt safe.
Now I live in Smithtown and I love it here too! Great schools we have 1/2 an acre of land, only negative is cost! BUt love being close to beaches and shopping and the town has a really good recreation and library programs for the kids!

It depends so much on individual preference. I already see something on this thread that I disagree with, but I'm just going to keep my comments to myself.
lol
I love Rockville Centre but the taxes are very high. If you want to be in RVC school district and stay in that area then look into South Hempstead. You get the benefits of RVC but without RVC taxes.
I live in Malverne which is a very small and cute town with reasonable taxes. I'm in VS #13 school district. I know MANY people are against the Malverne school district because it's diverse and borders up to a "not so great" neighborhood but if you're open I'd look into Malverne and Malverne sd too. It's about a 10min drive from the nassau/queens border.
I live in Rockville Centre with Oceanside schools. After living here and talking to people, RVC schools, while still good, are not quite what they are cracked up to be (overrated) and people are fed up with the taxes because of it. Many of the wealthy people in the million dollar section send their kids to private schools. My taxes are not as bad because I have Oceanside schools, and the quality of education I'm hearing is just about the same as RVC:) My pe school son is getting a lot of help from the Oceanside schools for his speech delay by funding it towards special services. Just do not plan on having a lot of property around here ...you pay for proximity to NYC! Oh, RVC has it's own electricity (no LIPA to deal with that is less $$$) and water ( reasonable also). I have the best of both worlds

I know most won't agree but I love living in Riverhead. So much to do, near wineries, beaches aren't too far, there's the aquarium, beautiful parks, lots of wonderful festivals, we have a community garden. The community is wonderful. The schools are getting big overhaul whivhnis wonderful. Sure there is room for improvement butt I think it's very up and coming. Lots of revitalization happening downtown...

We only considered Nassau, and we looked ALL over. Our fave town by far was Plainview / Old Bethpage , but the taxes are no bargain.
It basically comes down to your budget

West Islip, for sure. "Average" taxes are about 10k but great schools, large property size and very safe.
No real "village" area to shop but Babylon and Bay Shore have downtown areas that are only 5 minutes away.

I grew up in Massapequa Park, I loved it, the schools were great, we had so many electives etc. (Massapequa School district).
We bought our house in Sayville a few years ago, and I absolutely love it. They have so many festivals and events. We walk into town all the time (in the summer lol). We use Sayville Beach all the time, I can't tell you the last time we went to Robert Moses or Jones Beach. We use the farmers market all summer and well into the fall.

We live in Oceanside and I grew up in Long Beach. I love that area!
I grew up on the beach so being close the the ocean was important to me. We both work in the city and the commutte isn't terrible. Our taxes in Oceanside aren't horrible either (although ours are low compared to many houses). We are at 9,600 not including star for a 3 bedroom, 2 bath 60X100 lot.
Things I like about Oceanside: good schools, quick drive to Long Beach, very easy commute, it only takes me about 15 minutes to get to boarder of Queens and LI, LOTS of local shopping, and trader joes :)
We also looked in Merrick - which is also a GREAT neighborhood. We leaned towards Oceanside because it is slightly closer to my family for babysitting and we couldn't find much we liked in our budget with less than $12-$14K taxes that wasn't effected by Sandy (we preferred S. Merrick at the time).
Honestly though, if I didnt work in the city and didn't care about being close to family I would move to Suffolk! You get so much more bang for your buck!!! Our friends just bought in Holbrook and paid more than $100K less for their home, have about the same taxes, but SO much MORE space.

I love my town- Carle Place. It's teeny, one square mile and very friendly. I love having our own schools and amenities so close by yet it feels like they are a world away since it's so quiet.

Re: Please recommend your favorite town to live
Posted by jessnbrian We had to rule it out eventually because of the commute to the city - the bethpage line felt a little lacking compared to the babylon line.
Bethpage is on the Ronkonkoma line--which does seem to have the most issues.
I grew up there & lived there briefly when I started working in Manhattan. The commute is a little long for me, but people do longer & my dad did it for decades.
My mom is from Lindenhurst though and she always tells me the Babylon line is better & recommends any towns on that line to my friends who are looking.

As a commutter I second this!
I use to take the Ronkonkoma line and there were ALWAYS issues.
The Babylon line has a great reputation, lots of trains!

Re: Please recommend your favorite town to live
So far I love Greenlawn. I live close to the village, which is not the most exciting village, but it has a very small town feel. The schools are excellent (harborfields), though my kids aren't in the district yet. My DD1 goes to a local nursery school and all of the parents that I've met are really nice.
I used to live in Huntington. I love Huntington village and glad I'm still close, but to me, Greenlawn has much more of a community feel.
The taxes can be high around here, but there are still some houses under 12K around.

Love the babylon line. I don't commute to NYC anymore, but DH does, he takes an early a$$ train and comes home late, but there are ALWAYS options for him. And when we go in during the weekend, the train options are awesome.

We're in Huntington, but HF SD and I agree with Greenlawn. I joke around with DH that's it's the forgotten town (which is what I like about it.) I love the small town feel it has. It's definitely a tight knit community (Centerport/Greenlawn/Huntington...and that little section of Northport that attend HF.) The store owners make it a point to get to know people.

ITA! I was going to mention the neighboring Centerport and Huntington areas, too. It almost feels like Harborfields should be the town, not just the district. I love running errands in Greenlawn village. You're right about the store owner.

We just recently bought a home in Holbrook. I absolutely love my neighborhood and the town. The schools are decent, although I have no children in them yet. The town is easily accessible and has a lot to offer.
The schools are a total disaster right now. You are going to be seeing many houses go up for sale in the area this spring. Between that and the impending low income housing with The Hub and The Pines I couldn't recommend it unfortunately.

I don't know about this area but just wanted to comment that just because housing is considered "low income" doesn't mean it really is in the sense you are probably thinking. I am not picturing projects and drugs. I have had many clients in "low income" housing and their rent is still $1300+ a month. In addition the majority of people who tend to utilize apartments like this are new grads, single working class people trying to make ends meet and the elderly and disabled.

Northport / East Northport....... But I'm biast because that is where a grew up and am now raising my children !
( And I have lived in other towns in between )
I agree. I think the area has a lot to offer. The taxes in Npt tend to be cheaper because of the power plant.
If you want a south shore town I would say Sayville. I kinda feel like they both have that cute small town appeal.
I live in Farmingdale now but if I cold ever get my DH to move north it would be back to Northport.
These exactly!
