Re: Please recommend your favorite town to live
We just recently bought a home in Holbrook. I absolutely love my neighborhood and the town. The schools are decent, although I have no children in them yet. The town is easily accessible and has a lot to offer.

Re: Please recommend your favorite town to live
I grew up in Elmont, which used to be a good town but has gone down hill. My dad now lives in Floral Park and loves it, my mom lives in West Hempstead/Franklin Square school district and she loves it there. Both parents have younger children who are in the public schools and doing very well.
I live in Rockville Centre and LOVE the neighborhood. There are so many restaurants/bars to go to, lots of little shops, a movie theater and it's close to the train station. We have a co-op right now, when we're ready to buy a house I'll definitely look into RVC, Oceanside and East Rockaway.

Re: Please recommend your favorite town to live
Are you looking in Nassau or Suffolk? What do good schools means to you? The highest test scores? Diversity?
It depends so much on individual preference. I already see something on this thread that I disagree with, but I'm just going to keep my comments to myself.

LOL!
I am open to either. Prefer Nassau because its closer I work on the border of Queens and Nassau and most of our family/freinds are in queens but can't find a decent area without paying 12-14k in taxes. Which brings me to look in Suffolk..
Good schools means Im looking for Blue Ribbon type.

Not sure about the taxes in these areas but Bellmore, Merrick, Wantagh, Seaford, Massapequa would be my top choices in Nassau.

I love sayville! The downtown area/Main Street is very cute and walkable! I love that it's close to the water although I would never buy south of montauk hwy. Love a lot of the older homes. Taxes are a bit high but that is because sayville has great schools.

Have you considered Bayside? The schools are good and the property taxes are lower than Nassau and Suffolk because you are within the NYC limits. The houses are a little more expensive but if you run the numbers you maybe able to spend more on mortgage with lower taxes. I grew up in Bayside and my parents still live there- it is a great area because it is close to Manhattan and Nassau county.

This is where we looked as well. It was important for DH to be close to the train as well since he works in NYC. We ended up buying in one of these towns. I will say that my taxes are high, but typical for Nassau.

Re: Please recommend your favorite town to live
I sell houses all over (Nassau, Suffolk, occasionally Queens), and so I see the pros and cons to a lot of towns, including my own!
I live in Bellmore (N. Bellmore school district). We looked from Merrick to Massapequa when I was house hunting. I grew up in Seaford and we wanted to be somewhat close to my parents. But we also chose it because, at the time, we both commuted to Manhattan via LIRR, and the Babylon train line is one of the best (for number of express trains, etc.).
I really like living in Bellmore -- it's so convenient to various parkways, as well as the train. We are near so many parks, beaches, town pools, etc. I have a DS who just turned 5, and there's a lot to do with him here... local sports and library programs, lots of preschools to choose from. Also, I think the public schools are good, and I plan to send him (he starts K next Sept). There are a lot of restaurants and shops in the area... we like the little Bellmore Village area for movies, the International Delight Café, etc. They have a Christmas tree lighting each year, trick or treating at Halloween, various parades. I think it has a nice community feel here.
Being in real estate now (I wasn't when I bought), I think the Merrick to Massapequa area gives good overall value in terms of house, property size, schools, commute, etc. Taxes are high, but no higher than most places in Nassau. Plus, none of those towns (except Mass. Park) are incorporated villages, so no village taxes or rules!

For Nassau...the above towns. For Suffolk? Sayville or Bayport/Blue Point. I'm very picky with school districts. I also like being close to the water.

I love Rockville Centre but the taxes are very high. If you want to be in RVC school district and stay in that area then look into South Hempstead. You get the benefits of RVC but without RVC taxes.
I live in Malverne which is a very small and cute town with reasonable taxes. I'm in VS #13 school district. I know MANY people are against the Malverne school district because it's diverse and borders up to a "not so great" neighborhood but if you're open I'd look into Malverne and Malverne sd too. It's about a 10min drive from the nassau/queens border.

I agree. I think the area has a lot to offer. The taxes in Npt tend to be cheaper because of the power plant.
If you want a south shore town I would say Sayville. I kinda feel like they both have that cute small town appeal.
I live in Farmingdale now but if I cold ever get my DH to move north it would be back to Northport.

Have you considered Bethpage at all? I feel like I've seen lower taxes there than in some other areas.

Re: Please recommend your favorite town to live
I think it totally depends on what you're looking for in a house. Are you okay with 50x100 lot sizes? Possibly a smaller cape? Then I would recommend Albertson, Williston Park, parts of Mineola, and New Hyde Park. Close to Queens, good schools, nice community.
Do you want a bigger lot? Likely not happening in Nassau, unless you're willing to pay more than 12K in taxes.

Re: Please recommend your favorite town to live
I'm in Stony Brook and we love it out here. (DH and I are originally from Nassau but I would never go back after living in Suffolk) We live in a nice, big neighborhood that is very family friendly.
Taxes are "ok" by LI standards, we're around $9700/yr now. Property sizes are nice, we have 1/3 acre but some homes have up to 1/2 acre. The schools are great, we've been really happy with them so far. We're in the Three Village SD.
There is a ton of shopping around here too, although Rte 347 can be crazy at times but you figure out real fast how to avoid diving on it. lol We're also not far from the water, just a quick drive, so if you're interested in places like Pt. Jeff or any North Shore beaches we're close.
FYI - DH and I grew up in North Massapequa and went to Plainedge Schools. It was nice living out there too and the schools were all really good. I just feel Nassau is getting so crowded these days which is why we headed out east. I liked the bigger property sizes and lower taxes too!

Bethpage is great too, there are some areas where the houses are a little too close to industrial areas, which to me makes me nervous about pollutants, but the school district is excellent, big music program and arts if I remember correctly. I always forget about it, even though that was the first town we looked at. We had to rule it out eventually because of the commute to the city - the bethpage line felt a little lacking compared to the babylon line.
