French Manicure Questions

1-What colors do you use for a traditional french?

2-Do you paint the tip and then paint OVER it or do you paint the nail and then paint the tip?

3-Do you freehand the tip or use another method?

I think you paint the nail and then the tip (freehand, which is why I am so bad at it) then a coat of the color again. I think.

However, they sell stick on kits for it. Ones that have a guide for the tip OR ones like those Sally Hansen stick on nail polishes. Maybe they are easier?

I've done it both ways and I actually find the guides to be more difficult. Maybe it's just because I'm impatient and you'd really have to wait hours for your nails to be dry enough to put the guides on without smudging the bottom coat and I just feel so clumsy and then the guide isn't sticky enough so it moves and smudges the pristine white line I just painted and ARGH forget it. Free hand is easier for me.
