Vegetarian cookbooks... help! Need recs please!

We are looking to go lacto/ovo vegetarian instead of our current... uh... flexitarian (?) style. My 9 year old daughter recently decided on her own she doesn't want to eat animals anymore (yay). The 2 year old... well, he does whatever we do since he's only two. And my husband has decided to give up meat for lent (finally, I see an opening and I'm going for it! Would be so much easier if we all didn't eat meat rather than just me lol.)

Anyway, I am looking for some vegetarian/vegan cookbooks or blogs or whatever that have great recipes (and great pictures would be a plus, as I loooove pics with recipes. Is that weird? lol) While I don't think they are 100% ready to give up their dairy and eggs, I do like to leave those out when I can get away with it, like in baking and such.

I would prefer to use mostly low processed ingredients rather than a ton of processed fake meat... that's like our version of fast food, so we only use it sometimes (yay for Quorn chick'n nuggets for the kids, lol) and not usually for DH at all since he is Celiac.

I have the following already:
How it All Vegan
Garden of Vegan
Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World (which is awesome!)

Hmmm. I realize that I have all vegan cookbooks, even though we are not! LOL!

So. What do you love? Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Wow this is an amazing post. Kudos to your dtr and dh! Maybe he'll decide he feels great off meat and make the switch permanent! My dh has been having digestive issues so i suggested a week off meat. He agreed but has he started yetChat Icon

To your q I don't use cookbooks bit LOVE pinterest for veg/vegan recipes. Plenty of pics. And very creative interesting ideas. Keep us posted!

I really like Isa Chandra Moskowitz's books (she co-wrote Vegan Cupcakes). Her newest book is great, because it's full of less time-consuming recipes. It's called Isa Does it. There are pictures of (almost) every recipe, too!

Check out your library, too. Mine has a huge selection of veg cookbooks.

Thanks... This is what I am hoping too. My DH also has digestive issues (from the celiac) and on top of that, diverticulosis. So he needs to maintain a high fiber diet for that. It is SO hard to keep his fiber where it needs to be when he is eating so much meat!

Thanks for the pintrest idea. I have never really used pintrest before (Chat Icon )... Always found it overwhelming lol. But I will take a look at it this evening and teach myself how to use it lol.

And I was very amazed at my DD. She came to this decision on her own. I was never preachy and only recently did she start asking questions about meat. So, I directed her to all kinds of information... So long as there wasnt an agenda. I wanted her to have straight up facts, first. The truly heartbreaking stuff I figured she'll eventually come across when shes a bit older. I truly didnt expect her decision... This kid would have bacon ice cream! Lol. But right now, she has decided to try going without meat.

Anyway, thank you again!

She has a new book? Yay! Off to Amazon later to check it out!!!

I love my library. But by the time i pay the late fees I inevitably wind up incurring Chat Icon I figure I may as well just buy the book and save the trouble! So I always forget to try the library. But you are absolutely right. i could go there to look through them and then figure out what looks good before buying.

Thanks so much for your help!

Awesome! Congrats to you for changing your lifestyle! Chat Icon

I've been vegetarian for most of my life (20 years) and I've accumulated many cookbooks over the years. My absolute favorite is How to Cook Everything Vegetarian by Mark Bittman. Its a huge book - about 1000 pages - and covers so much. It doesn't have photos like you want, just sketches of cooking techniques, but other than that, it is the best vegetarian cookbook out there IMO. The focus is all on meatless meals rather than substituting "meat-like" products. It covers all different types of cuisine as well.

That's so cute about your daughter. I came to the decision early in my life, and my mom swears she saw it coming because I used to call meatloaf "cowloaf" and steak "slice of cow"..pork chops were "pig chops"...she knew I'd make the connection eventually!

I dont have the cookbook, but the Moosewood cookbook is supposed to be good.....The Moosewood is a very well-known vegetarian restaurant in Ithaca, NY -- may be worth checking out.

Thats awesome.... Cowloaf! Lol!!!!

It was funny. DD has always known that meat was from animals, but all of a sudden, it kind of just hit her that... omg, meat was from ANIMALS. And she was all kinds of horrified. So we shall see where it goes. She has already asked for a summer trip up to tour the Farm Sanctuary upstate. So I think shes pretty serious!

I am 95% veggie already and am more than fine with being 100% vegetarian. Hoping everyone else in the house sticks with it too! It really is a great lifestyle for both health AND personal moral reasons.

I will check out the Mark Bittman book; thank you. Sounds perfect - because no, pictures are not a requirement! Lol!

I also do very well with Pinterest for vegetarian recipes. It's amazing and very inspirational. I also often adapt meat recipes ie/use veggie broth instead of beef etc...

We love Farm Sanctuary. It and its animals are beautiful and magical. Make sure to visit Turpentine the Turkey, one of the cutest animals ever. More like a dog or a cat than a turkey.

Thank you everyone! I bought Isa Does It, the Mark Bittman book, And two others that looked interesting... Chloe's Kitchen and Everyday Happy Herbivore. Plus, I have a bunch of blogs bookmarked and I like Pintrest (though I still have to figure out the whole "following" and "pinning" part... Right now, I am just searching somewhat randomly lol)

Tonight is "go" night, and first up on tap are black bean and cilantro rice gluten free burritos with chips, salsa and guacamole on the side. I am so excited about this! DH even said if he feels better being vegetarian, he would stay that way permanently. Wish us luck!!!

I just went to the website to read about Turpentine. Now even I can't wait to go there! Lol. I wish I could do what this guy did and open up a sanctuary for animals. Its on my list of things to do when I win Power Ball lol!

Is there a time of year that is better to go? Spring vs summer? Or does it not really matter?
