Hair is growing in kinky and very curly

I know it seems strange but my hair is growing in extremely kinky and curly. The texture is completely different too. At this point I have extremely curly hair in many sections of my hair about 4 inches from the root while the remaining hair ( which is just above my chest) is the normal straight with slight wave. It is very odd, even my hairstylist finds it odd. She felt it might be a health issue as she has seen this ( though not this bad) with pregnant women.
I am not pregnant. I am assuming this hormonal (?) anyone else know what may be causing this ?

My hairdresser said that our hair changes as we get older - the texture can change significantly, etc. I wouldn't worry, maybe it's just changing like so many things do as the years pass :)
