it could take up to 2 years to get a refund, but the taxes should reflect in about 1- 1 1/2 years -- depending on how many times you get denied and if they have to take it to court, etc.

if it is already at the town level, it's probably past court and i would guess around a year?

Re: timeframe for grieving taxes?

What Town?

In Suffolk County, they are currently hearing small claims assessment review (SCAR) petitions filed in 2013 (for the 2013/14 tax year). There are some stragglers left over from the 2012/13 tax year but most of them have already been resolved.

The Towns are notoriously slow updating their records. Go on the Court's website and you will be able to see if a hearing date has been scheduled.

If the previous owner filed and you haven't heard anything (or haven't seen a reduced tax bill), they were denied at grievance level and you are waiting for an SCAR hearing in front of a hearing officer (in other words, it had to go to court).

The Town of Hempstead is handled through the assessing unit at the County of Nassau.

Go to

www.courts.state.ny.us

Then go to e-courts

Then go to Web Civil Supreme

You can search by party or index number. The party would be the former owners last name and they are the plaintiff.

You don't need to fill out a defendant name.

Re: timeframe for grieving taxes?

When we first looked at our house in fall 2012, the process had been started by previous owner. We closed in Feb and heard that the company was going to small claims court in July. We found out we won, but didn't see any money until recently.
