Dumb Manicure Question
Forgive me for my dumbness, but I am going to get my nails done this week, and don't have the slightest idea what to get done. I want to get a full set of acrylic nails. Since my nails are so short, I can't just get the acrylic sculpted on top of my own. Is this called a gel manicure? Silk wraps? What is shellac?
Last time I got mine done, it was for my wedding 3 years ago. Before that, it was in 2007 . I always paint my own, so I want the acrylic nails, but the ability to change polish whenever I choose.
And does anyone have any recommendations for a salon in the Islip area?

Re: Dumb Manicure Question
I would get the gel. It's supposed to last 2 weeks. Whenever I've gotten it I've also done the Shellac brand. I love New Feeling Nail Spa in Bay Shore/Islip on the corner of Saxon and Main St. Across from CVS. They do an awesome job and are all so nice!

Dumb Manicure Question
Are you looking for length? If so you need a full acrylic set which is tips glued on and acrylic sculpted on top like you explained. Silk wraps don't add length. They just wrap and protect what you already have. You can change the Polish on acrylic nails so long as you use acetone free remover. Shellac and gel are just names for long wear polish. They don't add length and you can't change the polish yourself. Hope that makes sense. Good luck!

Dumb Manicure Question
Silk wraps do add length with glue and powder. I've been wrapping my nails forever! Definitely do silk wraps instead of acrylics.

Acrylic will add length two ways: A. You can get acrylic sculpted nails (nail tech will use a form) which are good if you plan to keep them for a while and get them filled. b.Or if you're getting them for a event and want them off in a few weeks you can get acrylic over tips.
Silk wraps can add length and strength but only over tips.
A Gel Manicure or Gel Polish like Gelish or CND Shellac is a polish that lasts two weeks, gets cured in a UV or LED light, but doesn't add length.
Hard Gel is a like acrylic, but more durable and isn't really made to come off, its meant to be refilled/rebalanced every few weeks and can be sculpted or over tips (but most likely sculpted). Hard gel can't be soaked off like gel polish, soft gel or acrylic it needs to be filed off.

Re: Dumb Manicure Question
If I may offer another suggestion..I dont use shellac or gel bc of the chemicals. My recommendation is to get a manicure or a polish change every 2 weeks and your nails will grow. They will get so strong after a while you will not need a constant manicure after a while. This personally worked for me. I think tips etc are nice if you are going to a special event.
