Separation anxiety?
Anyone go through this?
DS has horrible meltdowns with any change in routine.
I was home with him all last week so dropping him back off this morning at my ILs was horrible.
He was fine until I said it was time to go this morning.
I'm dreading when school starts now in the am.
I feel like he is way too old for this now too.
Everyone says he calms down about 5 minutes after either DH or myself are out of sight.

Re: Separation anxiety?
I am not a parent but a teacher but I have done social stories to review what will happen with my students. You can also have DC pick a toy that is special for the two of you. Llama llama is a great kids book and has a llama toy. Also I have made a keychain or lanyard with family pictures on it so they can carry with them. Good luck

Separation anxiety?
My son has ADHD and is 11 and still does this sometimes. Though for him its not separation anxiety anymore, its more change in routine. Kids with ADHD are terrible with schedule changes and routine changes. If we are out somewhere doing errands and I decide I need to make an additional stop somewhere and he didn't know about it in advance, he has a freak out. Obviously he doesn't cry because he's older, but he yells and sulks and bangs things. He does it on Monday mornings if he wasn't paying attention to what day it is and he forgot that school is back.
So I've started giving him heads up on things DAYS in advance. I remind him all day Sunday and Sunday night that its back to school tomorrow. That way, nothing is a surprise. It's pretty pathetic that I have to do that at 11, but it makes my life easier. If we have a dentist, doctor or any appointment, I start reminding him two days ahead of time. Maybe try that?
