Capsule Wardrobe

Anyone ever think about doing this? REALLY paring your clothes down to what is classic, fits well, and that you feel good in?

This is a little extreme, but I've been thinking of REALLY weeding through and having a smaller selection of items that I really LOVE. I have items that I love and wear all the time, and items that sit in my closet but I feel guilty getting rid of...

...b/c I'm one of those weirdos who thinks that clothes have "feelings" and that a shirt will be "sad" if I give it away/sell it. NUTTY.

Re: Capsule Wardrobe

I've been reading a bunch of articles on the idea, and I like it a lot. I do have some extra items that I'd keep just b/c I like them, but I'd love to streamline things.

Re: Capsule Wardrobe

Two things that I should own but don't - a black sheath dress and plain black heels. Wtf. Getting this done is going to be my new obsession.

Re: Capsule Wardrobe

I started working on this. Its hard, but I am trying to really streamline. Hopefully I can sell a bunch of items on eBay, and I've started to think about which basics I don't own that I should add. I just ordered a plain black sheath dress and a black cotton cardigan - neither of which I owned.

Any other basics that you guys think a woman MUST have in her wardrobe?

I've come to learn that I'm not mature enough to own cashmere Chat Icon I always take great care of it for a few months and then I give up and ruin it.

Re: Capsule Wardrobe

It's a fantastic idea.

I also have noticed this seems to be the latest turn many fashion bloggers are taking as well.

I have so many items I hold onto that I never wear.

I started getting rid of stuff this summer and it was so liberating.

Re: Capsule Wardrobe

I cleaned house BIG TIME this weekend. Put a TON of stuff on eBay. Replaced 2 pieces that I didnt have (pencil skirt & black sheath) and now I'm just going to strive to be super selective about what I add to my wardrobe.

I so need to do this. I have tons of clothes that I never wear, or were impulse purchases. This will be my goal in the next several months. For quality pieces, where do you prefer to shop ?

For quality clothes I like Bloomingdales. I also get a lot of great stuff at JCrew - very classic and the clothes fit me extremely well.

Also I find some good stuff at outlets - I prefer Woodbury Commons - DVF and Theory have great stuff.

Re: Capsule Wardrobe

So, I added these two items, from Loft, to my wardrobe. I actually forgot that I purchased these black wedge pumps a few months ago - I hadn't worn them yet. LOVE that they're not real leather. And I got this dress, which hits slightly below the knee... usually I hate that, but this was really flattering IMO.

Re: Capsule Wardrobe

I don't know if I could do this. My problem is not even that I buy a lot of things, but I am not good at basics. The examples I have seen seem so boring. ( although I like the color & patterns in the one 2Badsosad posted.) While I do own a lot of navy blue, I like bright colors & the occasional pattern.

I don't own ANY black dresses.

The issue I do run into though, that a capsule wardrobe could help with is that I don't have "go-to" outfits. I have a Bridal Tea to go to on Sunday & I am at a loss for what to wear.

I also don't have basic black heels--I do have wedges but they are only a 1.5 inch heel. and I have a higher heel that is a peep toe sling back.

I love the idea of shift dresses, but they usually have such a high neckline that I don't find flattering on my large chest.

For those of you that are doing/have done this--are you at a consistent weight? That's the other issue I have.

I don't want to invest in pieces in my current size.

Re: Capsule Wardrobe

I'm at a consistent weight. I know what you mean about a capsule wardrobe becoming "boring" - I also like color/pattern. I find that I use the basics for bottoms, dresses, and shoes. I use tops and scarves to work in "color" and pattern. I'll wear print blouses with pants or a skirt and a cardigan over it. Then I do a neutral shoe or boot. I do have a few patterned dresses (I kept 2 after my big purge) but I find that b/c I"m bottom heavy, I look better in a solid bottom.
