I just wanted to know if this is typical or not. My DS attends a full day pre-school, where they take a 1.5 hour nap in the middle of the day. Everytime that DS has gotten a cold, the nurse from the school has called me to let me know that DS hasn't been able to sleep because he is congested and he is not himself and kind of pushes for him to be picked up. He's been there a month and a half and so far I had to pick him up once (he was fine later on that day) and today I received another call from the Nurse seeing if it was possible for DS to get picked up because again he hasn't been himself with the cold/congestion. Am I wrong for thinking this is a little ridiculous to have them call me to go get him every time he has a cold? I did take him to the doctor yesterday (school was closed) because on Monday they had mentioned he didn't nap because of his cold and the doctor said that there is nothing really we can do, just a cold that needs to run its course.

Yes. It's ridiculous. Especially since he probably caught the cold from there.

Our daycare/preschool will only call us if they are vomiting, have pink eye, a fever, or are out of sorts.

Wow. That is definitely over the top! Our center only calls for fever, crazy rashes, pink eye, vomiting... that sort of thing. Simple colds are well tolerated - practically expected, even! And if he doesn't nap, then they either sit with him and rub his back while he rests quietly or if he's not sleeping and completely rambunctious, they just take him to another classroom that isn't napping until nap time is over.

I don't get annoyed easily, but I'd probably be pretty irritated in your situation, I think.

Exactly! Generally if one of the kids won't nap they have them sit quietly and do another activity. Sounds like they aren't willing to do so..

That's crazy. Our daycare only calls for a fever over 100, vomiting or diarrhea more than once, or something like pink eye or head lice.

My previous daycare had a policy that the child couldn't attend if he/she was not able to "participate in normally scheduled classroom activities". To me, if the nurse thinks he's not being his "normal" self, she's in the right to call you to offer for you to pick him up.

yes its crazy and I hated it. So glad she's in public school now where its not even told if she has a cough. No one cares about sniffles, sneezes, coughs. Colds come and go and follow with ear infections or not. Allergies fill in when its not a cold.

I picked AJ up once (rushed from work in a worry) only see her fine and happy. They took an ear temp wrong. They did it again and I made them test her right in front me and she was fine. Three times she was fine. "oops" seriously, oops? Ugh. They always called like I had the 'option' to drop everything for my daughter - hi can you cut that guilty pie slice any LARGER?!

so annoying.

I changed her to another prek and it was better but still got some calls. I don't mind the calls. I just minded the guilt and implication that I had to do something when there was nothing to do. I didn't need the added pressure. Ugh.. makes me mad just thinking about it.

My kids go to daycare, but if they couldn't go whenever they had colds, I'd spend most of the time home with them. As long as there's no fever or anything else going on, they can attend with colds. Even if they don't nap that well, as long as they're acting okay during the activities, they should be allowed to stay.

My DS is older now and looking back on that experience, I think sometimes the nurses do that because there are parents who are not working FT or have more flexible schedules that would prefer to come and pick the child up if they are not feeling well. My DS's daycare director would sometimes call if he was not himself. She would say I didn't have to come get him, but wanted to let me know so I could decide what to do.
