potatoes for thanksgiving. ...
I bought red potatoes. All the recipes I see for mashed usually have yukon gold. I am not going back to the store. Anyone have any red potato mashed potatoes recipes? Or would it be totally odd if I did roasted red potatoes? I am having sweet potatoes with marshmallows as well

I do mashed potatoes with red potatoes sometimes and I leave the skin on (so much easier). I boil with some salt and then mash with some milk and butter. They come out great!

Yes, DH calls this "dirty mash" bc the skins are on.
I also like to boil the red potatoes and also boil string beans then toss the two together. While still hot I drizzle EVOO and fresh lemon juice over the top with S & P and they are delicious!

I make that as a potato salad during the summer since I don't like mayo.
You can also add a little balsamic vinegar to give it a little tang.

You can def use the recipes that call for Yukon gold with the red, or any kind of potato! Just find a recipe you like and use it. I don't really follow a recipe- I just mash whatever potatoes I have up with milk and butter, sometimes sour cream.

I know it's late but red potatoes are fine. However, 2 years ago, I went with yukon gold and I DO taste a difference. Creamier!! But reds are fine, too! But I tend to smother with butter, milk, and sour cream.

Yeah, this is late so not help for Thanksgiving, but red potatoes are waxier and usually recommended more for potato salads and that type of thing. You can definitely make mashed potatoes with them, but they are more of a rustic, smashed potato type thing.
Usually russet potatoes (or sometimes Yukon gold) are recommended for mashed because they are starchier, so mashed potatoes made with these tend to be fluffier and creamier.
But I think both types of potatoes are delicious! Hope yours were good.
