Just curious of the ballpark cost. Is it similar to finishing a basement in terms of cost? I know you need permits and all that. We are considering making a master bedroom with bathroom....

Re: Anyone convert their garage to a bedroom

We converted the garage in our townhouse to a bedroom.
We kept about 4 feet of the garage with the garage door as storage.
The rest became a bedroom for my son. It can be slightly less than finishing a basement because garages usually have Sheetrock and insulation.
If your floor is sloped, you'll need to address that.
If you're adding plumbing and electric that will be a few thousand, the bathroom alone will probably be $6000-7000 depending on size and finishes.
The biggest cost for us was adding heating and a/c.
My DH is in the business so he did all the work, I don't remember the exact costs.
It was worth the effort and expense for us.

We were looking into a house that did this. No idea what the costs were, but the room itself is very large. Just note that this can affect resale value in the future. The house we liked had been on the market since June, in part because other prospective buyers seemed to want a garage.

Yes, this is exactly what I was thinking. We saw SO MANY houses with converted garages and every one was a deal breaker. Some of the rooms were gorgeous, but we wanted a garage.

Obviously, if you need the space, you need the space and that shouldn't deter you, especially if you have no plans to sell for a very long time!

Thanks we actually thought about that. We went back and forth between adding an addition and moving. We really love our house and neighborhood and don't want to move but it will just be too costly to add another floor or room out of the back. I wouldn't even care but we have a 2 yr old girl and a boy on the way and eventually will need their own rooms. Love everything about the house, just need one more bedroom!

I'm just wondering what did you do about the garage door to keep only 4 feet? It seems like when the garage door is open ours will go back more than 4 feet...

That's a good point, I guess it was more like 5 or 6 feet, just enough for the garage door to open. The bedroom was still about 11 feet long. We had a very tall attic in that townhouse so DH built a loft as well which is where my sons bed was, he used the main room to hang out with his friends.
The room was pretty narrow, even if we abandoned the garage door it would have been very difficult to fit a master bedroom and bathroom in that space. Garages are different sizes though so yours might be much bigger.
