Re: House on a main rd
We moved from a cul-de-sac to a street you described and I actually like living here better. When you are in my backyard you hear nothing. My house is elevsted at set back a bit. We also planted arborvitae trees across the front. I wouldn't rule it out. If my housr was about a half mile down the road, I wouldn't have bought it. For whatever reason it is busier. Goldenrod is right about the benefits. My block is always plowed! There is woods across from me so my kids will always be picked up at my driveway. I would have had to walk to the corner at our old house, my street rarely got plowed more than twice, people would fly down thinking they could go around the block,

House on a main rd
A main road wouldn't be my first choice, we try to keep our windows open all summer and I'm very sensitive to loud noise, plus I would be worried about exhaust. Sometimes there are exceptions though, in my neighborhood the road that goes around our lake has a double yellow line and it's pretty busy. However, the homes on the lakeside of the road have the most spectacular views and great backyards, so it's a trade off. We are in contract for an investment property in my neighborhood, it is on a road with a double yellow line, but it's on a corner. the driveway is in the side street so it's safer getting in and out, also children could easily play on the very quiet side street. I think main roads with sidewalks are a better option too. There are so many main roads on this island and they are all lined with occupied homes so it can't be that bad. I always say each person needs to decide for themselves what they are comfortable with.

Deal breaker for us. No double yellows/main roads.
I agree, when I was looking I think I was more focused on being in the neighborhood I wanted but I am SO glad we ended up on a quite street. A couple blocks away there is a busy street, a bus goes down it, it is always jammed, it stinks I feel for the people who live there esp bc they just put the bus a couple years ago out of no where.

DH and I passed up looking at MANY homes because of their location - I see no reason to go into a house 'just to look at it' if you don't like where it's located, for whatever reason.
You don't want to end up talking yourself into something your first instinct told you to stay away from - that's JMO.
Busy/Main roads were definite dealbreakers for us

Same. We always mapped every house first before even considering going to see it.
