House on a main rd
Would you consider buying a house on a busier street? We are looking at one this weekend located not on a true main road but definitely busier. Would this be a deal breaker for you? It is for me but dh thinks we should just go look at it and not rule it out. I just don't want him to fall in love

Re: House on a main rd
We live on a very main road, aside from traffic noise, it doesnt bother me but its REALLY loud when it rains. If your LR and BR are away from the street, MUCH better off. Ours is on the front and its really loud, but I barely hear anything in the back of the house. Other than that, the main rd doesnt bother me at all.

Re: House on a main rd
For us, we didn't want a house on a main road or a corner lot. Both were deal breakers for us.

House on a main rd
I had very few deal breakers when looking for a house. One was a main road. We found a house that had every must-have on our list but was on a relatively busy street. The house was perfect and we decided there was always going to be something we'd have to compromise on, otherwise we'd be looking forever. We bought the house and I have absolutely no regrets.

Re: House on a main rd
I grew up on a main road that had a bus route. It was a corner house so we played on the side street. If not then it would have to have a bigger backyard for me to consider it. I live off a main road now that is a cut through street.

Re: House on a main rd
It depends on how "main" of a street. There are benefits to being on a more used road. When there is a snowstorm, they get plowed quicker. Those are usually the streets that are the first in the neighborhood to get FiOS, public water, sewer system, gas, etc. The quiet cul-de-sacs are often the last to get services.

We would not consider any house on a main road - for us, that was a deal breaker

House on a main rd
Deal breaker. My street isn't a main road but it's used as a shortcut often so it's busier than I'd like. It kinda sucks that DD won't be able to play out front.

I wouldn't want a house on a main road. Nothing with a yellow line. If it were just a little busy but not a main road, I would consider it.

This! We bought a house we love on a double yellow line road. The road is what it is, but we aren't right on top of it--the house is set back some. And it's not a crazy busy street, so it's not noisy or anything. We looked at many houses in cul de sacs and more private blocks, but I didn't like the inside of the houses as much as this one.

Deal breaker for us. We have kids and I don't want to worry about them playing in the street/running into the street and a car not seeing them. Growing up, we played in the street all the time, so this was a big factor for me.

For me it is a deal breaker. Dh thinks we should look because you never know but I'm in agreement with most- deal breaker. It's on connetquot ave if any of you know where that is. I think it's just too busy

Re: House on a main rd
Main roads are a deal breaker for us because first, I feel like it's a danger to my kids if they play outside and second, I really love being in a "neighborhood" where you can walk/run around and there are other kids to play with and neighbors to see. I think it also depends upon how busy the road is - you don't want noise, or trouble pulling in and out.

Re: House on a main rd
We live on a corner and the side street is a main road, but our actual house faces a regular residential road. So we have no issues of backing out of our driveway. We really liked the house so at the time we didn't really think about it. If I were to go house hunting again keeping in mind that I now have a child I would probably not have bought where we bought... but now it is what it is.

House on a main rd
We live on a yellow line road but it ends at a beach so not a throughway, we are the corner property with a cul de sac on that side. We are also 1,000 feet from a beach/playground (which is at the end of that yellow road) Doesn't bother me one bit...Best location!

That is a busy road because it gets you to sunrise Hwy. but those homes usually have larger back properties (I know a few friends with horse properties there). Another friend actually was hit by a car while moving her other car out of the street...she was thrown through the windshield and the car sped off. (Across from Fatty McGees)

Re: House on a main rd
I think it depends on the area.
We ended up buying on a busier road, double yellow lines, but the town is quiet so it's not really a "main" road.

Re: House on a main rd
Any double yellow line road is a deal breaker for us for several reasons:
we have kids and would worry about them running into the street
When you have company over parking will be difficult for them
busy/noisy
we really want a "neighborhood" to be able to walk the dog and let the kids ride bikes
We've found several houses that we absolutely LOVED and would have put an offer on in a heartbeat, but they were on double yellows and we decided against it.

Re: House on a main rd
I would pass only because of my child's safety. Also, my friend lives on a main road that lots of trucks take to get to the LIE and she not only complains about the noise, but also the amount of pollution. She doesn't like leaving her windows open because she smells the smog from the trucks and she doesn't want her DD to inhale it.
