Mustering up the energy to exercise...

I'm suffering from some big time first trimester exhaustion but I really would like to continue exercising. Yet I plop on the couch after work every night and can't bear the idea if getting my rear end up and moving.

How do you overcome the tiredness? I ran and walked a TON during my first pregnancy and I didn't have the kind of exhaustion I'm experiencing this time. I want to get good habits established early but I just feel like a lump on a log Chat Icon

Any ideas?

You have to say the heck with it and just do it. Once you start you should be fine.

Re: Mustering up the energy to exercise...

If it makes you feel any better, during my entire first trimester I was so exhausted that I got home from work at about 4:45pm each day and literally went to bed for the night until 7am the next morning. Literally every single day. Weekends, all I did was sleep as late as I could and just rest as much as possible. If I felt like I had any energy at any time, I walked a little in the neighborhood or the mall if weather was bad.

Once I hit my second trimester I was 100% better in terms of energy and then I was able to exercise more - walking, jogging, swimming, etc.

So, don't worry - you can take it easy now and when you get your energy back start up again and it'll be fine.

This definitely does make me feel better!! Like I said, I didn't experience this level if tiredness the first time around so I feel so lazy. But maybe I just need to lighten up on myself and just take advantage of getting back into the swing of things once my energy picks back up. Thank you!

It sucked but I just did it and after it was over, I was happy I did. I didn't go crazy though, I walked or did the elliptical or ran a short distance. Once the 2nd tri hit, I had much more energy

I swear the exercise was the reason I didn't have as much fatigue during my 1st tri. I know it sucks when all you want to do is sleep but just pack a gym bag and make yourself go straight from work. Even if you're only doing 30 mins of walking on a treadmill, that's still more than sitting on a couch. Having that level of fitness will really help you as you start to get bigger too!!! GL!

If anything, try to enroll in a prenatal yoga class....

Re: Mustering up the energy to exercise...

The first tri was hit or miss for me. I am an avid exerciser and hated the feeling of not working out. As soon as i felt slightly more human I got back to the gym. I currently weight train 3x a week and do cardio at least once. I feel better when I do it for sure. Listen t your body and get back at it when you can! Chat Icon

This! I just forced myself and made sure it was part of my routine.

Mustering up the energy to exercise...

My job was on my feet and moving, so I just said screw it and parked on the couch, or in front of the toilet. I walked on weekends. But I was also told no exercise with more cardio then walking/swimming and no lifting anything over 5lbs, because I did ivf and had major abdominal surgery prior to that. So I was pretty limited. I think my job on my feet was enough of a workout.

Re: Mustering up the energy to exercise...

Honestly, in my first trimester, I was barely exercising if at all.

It wasn't until week 10-11 that I got the What to Expect When You're Expecting The Workout DVD and have been loving it. There are 5 "workouts" and each is 10 minutes, 3 cardio, 2 strength. So depending on your energy level you can do 1 cardio and 1 strength, or just 1 cardio (believe me, you feel better after even doing just 1), or like I did yesterday 2 cardio and a strength to do a full 30 minutes.

Energy comes back, I promise! Chat Icon
