Measles Questions
Two questions---
1. I am a teacher and there is rumored to be a case of measles in the building. Do I need to be concerned about this? Is it like 5ths disease where I would need to leave if I am not immune? (I am vaccinated but I know I should still check my titers.)
2. My son has not yet gotten his MMR and I know my ped is going to push me to do it at his 21 month visit. I can't be around him for a bit can I?
I am so freaked out but all of this. I was not ready to give this vaccine but now have no idea what to do!

Re: Measles Questions
You are fine if your titers are good. Your ob should have checked these.
And get your kid vaccinated!!!

Re: Measles Questions
uhh, I would get your kid vaccinated. Not worth the risk in my opinion ( I think my pedi gives it at 15 months and 3 yo). You should also have been vaccinated as a child and your OB probably checked your titers when you found out you were pregnant. They would have let you know if you weren't protected.

Re: Measles Questions
I would think you would only have to stay away from your son if it was a live vaccine but it's not. Talk to your OB. If your titers weren't okay when they checked, they probably would have told you. I would take my son to get vaccinated immediately though if I were you.

Re: Measles Questions
MMR is a live vaccine. My ped said it's fine to get my kids vaxed with live vaccines when I'm pregnant. My midwife had some reservations. We will be checking my titers anyway for rubella so they'll check the MM as well.

Re: Measles Questions
I plan to ask my OB on thurs. I'm also wondering if I cant give it now and I wait til after baby is here if them being around baby is a risk. I also heard that babies have moms immunity to it til 12 mo, which is why they don't do it til 12 mo. This is all from other moms and not health care pros so I still plan to ask OB and ped. I'd imagine some may have different opinions on this all.

Yes it's definitely a live vaccine. I called the obgyn. Thanks for the tip. I'm not anti vax but this one stresses me out.

Def have mother's immunity for MMR til 12 months. Same not true for chicken pox. I delayed chicken pox but gave MMR on time with a newborn. Your ped will confirm.

She said I am immune to rubella which suggests immunity to measles as mumps as well. She said she can send me to have my titers checked but doesn't think it's necessary and that I was safe to go to work. She didn't mention any concern over Nate getting the vaccine either. I am still undecided about what I am doing as far that goes though.

Measles Questions
My dad was telling me a horror story yesterday about a boy on his block who died of measles when measles went around his area as a kid. He said most kids didn't suffer much but those who did had permanent repercussions. He himself had measles and it was much like chicken pox. But he had an ill brother (who died a year later) and they had to remove Alfred from the house while my dad was sick.
My dad said mumps was the scarier one. Did you know mumps can cause sterility in boys?
He was born after the polio vac but only a few years and new many people living with the terrible effects of polio.
Anyhow my point is his generation remembers what it was like pre-vaccines and are mostly pro-vacs. I just saw a study that charts the vac debates by age and it showed the younger you are the more anti-vac likely you are. They said it's because we're to far removed from knowing life without vacsl. We don't have that knowledge so it's easy to say vacs can do this, vacs can do that.... But we don't know what life was like without them.
The two big MMR concerns have been disproved, IBS and autism. Did you know the dr. Who said autism came from the MMR vaccine had financial backing so trying to come up with three separate vaccines instead. Talk about conflict of interest. There's still damage that can happen, and I'd hate my child to be that 3%, but after hearing my dads tales of life pre-vacs, I'd be more worried about what could happen to her if she got these diseases, especially mumps or polio, but even measles.
Personally I'd be concerned about him getting measles with you having an infant in the house.

This isn't always true, there's a lot of babies under 12 months being effected by this outbreak. It's likely but not guaranteed.

True: immunity wanes with baby age. And you only get immunity if mom has it (5% of vaccines don't "take", thus the importance of herd immunity). BUT I certainly had a fresh newborn with my son when he had his MMR & had the conversation with the ped. It was no problem. I def have immunity (I had titers checked).

Re: Measles Questions
Please understand I am in no way anti-vax. The only one I have delayed is the MMR. I have read the studies and no that they were disproven however I can't get the personal anecdotes of different families out of my head. My mom and her sisters all had measles as kids. My husband and I are taking this very seriously.
I am not looking to start a vaccine debate at all. I respect everyone's opinion and I really am struggling with this decision. Logically, I am sure he would be fine but my gut and heart are petrified.

ill be getting the twins vaxxed once they're fully over their illness and taking a bit of extra precaution- washing hands after diaper changes, Epsom baths. if you read up about it, there have been no known cases of MMR vaccine shedding and causing measles.
