DOE teachers- maternity help

So i just found out I'm due Oct 19 2015, and this is my first year teaching in the DOE. Should I be nervous about getting time off and all of that? This is my first baby, and I have no clue how the maternity leave works with the DOE, and if I will even get paid while I'm out, since I really haven't accrued many sick days yet. Any advice would be great.

Also, when is a good time to tell my principal? Should I tell her in the beginning of April at 12 weeks, or should I try to wait a little longer? Not sure when they make their contracts with the teachers for the next year

just an update: did some research and noticed that they can excess up until June 15, but I can't wait that long to tell her! I am wondering if I should tell her the day before we leave for Easter break, or after we return? My thinking is that she might be in a really good mood since it's right before break, but idk!!!!!

Exceeding would be based strictly on time and I see that's a concern-I would tell my principal as soon as I was comfortable and not wait too
long so they could plan for your leave, which comes out of your sick time-there are Uft workshops to help you understand..maybe right after your final observation since that is later April so you might know where you stand? Congratulations and don't panic-teachers get pregnant all the time Chat Icon

If you have a good relationship with your principal, i would say the sooner the better. Especially because in April/ May they plan placements for the following year! Chat Icon

She's nice, but this is only my first year there, so I am definitely worried. I am 12 weeks around easter- I'm always afraid of the possibility of being "let go"

The way I understand it.... if it happens you will go to the ATR pool but you have rights to the positions if opened in your scool. You will have to borriw days for your 6 or 8 weeks which won't change.

Thats what I thought too... being placed in ATR is by least seniority and school budget. Double check with your payroll secretary or UFT rep, but I'm pretty sure thats the protocol for "letting go". ATR still means you get a paycheck however but not a permanent position until you get hired by a school...

Okay, thanks everyone- I am just a worrier when it comes to my job. I am sure it will all be just fine.... I would be alot more worried if I was a LI teacher- I know the DOE is a little better with keeping their teachers, at least in the better districts. Luckily I'm in a good school in a nice area, so I don't anticipate any excessing (hopefully!)
