DOE Teachers and Maternity Leave
So I've been trying to research this, and I'm just so confused. I'd ask my secretary once I go back (and once I get into my second trimester), but she is less than helpful. I'm still waiting for my PD hours to be submitted from the past two years.
Now here's the issue. I'm not tenured. I was excessed from my last job, and started three years ago (next october).
Can anyone tell me what I need to do - how much time I can take -
Anything to help!
Thanks

Re: DOE Teachers and Maternity Leave
I *think* that you're eligible for FMLA (12 weeks, less whatever sick days you've taken in the past calendar year). You only get paid for the # of sick days you've accumulated.

I agree you get 12 weeks with FMLA. They count vacation weeks within the 12 weeks. I am not sure when you are due .
But feb break and easter break get counted in your 12 weeks. The only Vacation that doesn't count is summer break. I know the UFT gives workshops on this topic and I heard its very helpful.
Good luck I hope you get the info you need.

I have a question -- what do you mean Feb breaks & April breaks are counted? Thanks!

I am due the end of March - so technically I wouldn't have to go out on leave until we get back in April - not that I would be returning after Easter break.
The workshop was just last week or so, but I was away. If I took the 12 weeks, would I be able to return to my job without a problem regardless of being tenured? How many weeks can I go out on pay? Sorry - I'm totally dumb about this. Never looked into it cause I didn't expect to get pregnant so quickly.
Thanks

You're only considered "sick" for 6 weeks (8 weeks for a c-section). You will only be paid during this time IF you have the sick days banked. (You can borrow up to 20 days if you don't, but then you go back to work with -20 days that have to be bought or earned back). FMLA runs at the same time, and will cover you for a max of 12 weeks.
Here's my example. DD was born 11/30. My sick days weren't docked during December break. BUT. The week off still counted against me for FMLA; I couldn't take an additional week off just because we didn't have school.
Am I making sense?
