Drafty Fireplace?
Are ALL fireplaces drafty? Our house has its fireplace in the basement. Everytime I go downstairs, my ankles immediately feel cold when I head over towads the den with the fireplace. I have complained to my DH who grew up with a fireplace, and he said ALL fireplaces are drafty. I say this can't be normal and cold air must be shooting down the chimney and something is ajar (but then again with all the snow wouldnt it be wet)?
We have never done anything with the fireplace since we bought the house last year. it has never been used.

Re: Drafty Fireplace?
Sounds like the damper is open. That would cause a draft. Look for the lever to close it which is within reach inside the fireplace. If your DH has had a fireplace, he would know how to close it.

Drafty Fireplace?
Damper could be open but yes fireplaces are notoriously drafty no matter what.

Re: Drafty Fireplace?
We had a wood burning fireplace and ours wasn't drafty. Make sure the damper (think that's what it's called) is closed. Ours you had to reach up and move a lever or something.
