Is $20,000 for cabinets and granite too much?
Good cherry cabinets. Stock cabinets with some custom aspects like molding and custom shallow pantry.

No not for good quality. Ours cost even more than that.

We got custom maple cabinets with all the extras - extended uppers, plywood boxes, soft close doors and drawers, custom stain, etc and granite (mid-level) and we paid about that much.
It also depends upon how many cabinets you're getting. You might be able to get custom for what you're paying.

Depends on the size of the kitchen. I did my entire kitchen for less than half that with good quality cabinets but mine isn't that big. We did work ourselves so we had no labor.

Re: Is $20,000 for cabinets and granite too much?
It really depends on so many factors. Height of upper cabinets Any glass accents of upper cabinets Base cabinets have any rolls outs, custom corner cabinets. Any tall pantries, wall oven built in cabinets How much of the cabinet door covers the frame of the cabinet even makes a difference.
Is it real cherry wood or a cherry wood color? Those are 2 different things. Is the cabinet box plywood or particle board.
As another poster mentioned your size of the kitchen also matters. What level granite did you pick?

Re: Is $20,000 for cabinets and granite too much?
I had semi custom kitchen cabinets put in and mine were around 12,000 but I have a small kitchen. I did natural quartz instead of granite and it was around 6,000 but again I have a small kitchen… I have pictures in my album :)

The answer is: Is it?
Its all about the quality, workmanship etc. If you said you were getting Ikea cabinets you are hanging yourself I would say yes. If you said its all custom, you picket out the slab etc, I would say no.

There are so many variables. Many mentioned above. It also depends on also how much granite and what sort of edge will be on it. Fancier edges cost more.
I put in a custom kitchen with all the bells and whistles in a small kitchen and the cabinets alone ran over $33,000 ten years ago. I can't remember the cost of the granite. Four years ago I put in a slightly smaller kitchen in another house with stock cabinets made of wood with plywood boxes and no extras. Those cabinets cost me only $4000. Granite with plain edges cost $2200.
The cheaper kitchen looked great, but didn't function as well and one drawer kept coming off its tracks. But, I had only done the kitchen to be able to sell the house. I knew that any buyer would expand the house and the kitchen would be gutted anyway, so quality and function didn't matter as much as looks.

Depends on how much that is per square foot. We're redoing our kitchen right now and that is a fraction of what we're paying, but we have a lot of square footage.
