need advice re: school lunch

Most days I send my son to school with lunch its usually a sandwich, milk, some kind of healthy snack and two cookies. Since Christmas break he has come home with hardly anything eaten at all on 6 different occasions, I called and wrote letters to the teacher it gets better and than goes back to how it was

Yesterday he came home with his ENTIRE lunch, all he ate was 1 slice of bread. I find this crazy, what is the teacher doing while they eat lunch that this happens all the time and obviously me writing notes about it isn't helping

should I call the principal? what would u do in this situation?

need advice re: school lunch

My son is only 3 but often comes home with most of his lunch not eaten. It doesn't worry me too much. I follow the rule that he will eat when he is hungry.

In our school, Teachers don't go to lunch with the students. They take their lunch break, and the aides are in the lunch room. No one is overseeing that the kids eat their lunch. Unfortunately I don't think you can do anything about it, other than reiterate to your son that he needs to eat his lunch.

need advice re: school lunch

Crashing:

This happened to my niece when she started Kindergarten. Found out from her teacher she was chatting away/playing during lunch. She eventually learned that she has to stop playing around so much and has to eat during lunch.

I would speak to your DS directly and see what is actually happening during lunch.

Chances are there are aides and if it's like my kid's school there are a lot of kids eating at once and there is no way to make sure a kid is actually eating.

My daughter was bringing stuff home uneaten and after a coupe times she confessed that she did not like what I was giving her. I took her to the grocery store and let her choose a few things. Sometimes she does not want sandwiches so I'll send a Babybel cheese with crackers and tomatoes or celery and she will eat that.

How old is your child? Most of the times teachers are not in the lunch room with the kids and there are only aides who watch over all the kids in the class.

Thanks for all the info I spoke to him about the importance of eating lunch and I called the teacher and asked that his seat be moved away from his friends so he eats

Please don't take this the wrong way but I think separating him from his friends is a bad idea. Kids need that time to socialize as the rest of their day is so structured. As a btdt mom I would suggest packing finger food instead of a sandwich. My kids seldom like sandwiches in their lunch box. Instead I do rolled up turkey, string cheese, some pretzels and some clementines. Or some variation on this theme. I find it is best to stick to bite sized food. My DD really likes when I pack soup in a thermos however my DS does not. I understand the importance of eating their lunch but I wouldn't ever separate my kids from their friends.

ITA with this.

Last year my DD was in Kindergarten and she hardly ever finished her lunch, she always said there wasn't enough time. It took a LONG time but eventually she figured out how to socialize AND eat without running out of time. Chat Icon I think it's normal for Kindergarten kids to have difficulty with the time constraints at lunch because they never had the pressure to eat quickly before. They get the hang of it eventually. Chat Icon

Re: need advice re: school lunch

When DS was in Kindergarten I went about 3 times a week to volunteer during lunch time. Teachers were never there, only school staff or parents volunteering. They had 20 minutes to eat lunch. Some kids ate a lot, others were more interesting on socializing. I heard many times parents complaining about the lack of time, but witnessing that, I knew the fact was the kids took advantage of the time to talk to their friends.

DS is in 4th grade now, and sometimes he just have his juice and nothing else (like today, his sandwich came back intact), not even a snack. They are so much more serious now, that lunch time and recess is the time to have fun and talk to his friends.

Have a nice snack when he gets back home, and pack little things that are easy for him to eat.
