If your child took the test how did they find them?

My third grader did great on day one - was very upset yesterday as she didn't finish and even though she did not finish today either she was not upset about it. I think because I had a really long talk with her last night about just doing her best and not worrying about finishing or the results.

Her teacher said they were very difficult and lengthy and more of her kids did not finish today or yesterday.

Just curious as to how your kids found them?

My kids never worried about them, ever. I never made a big deal about it either, I think that makes a BIG difference.
I did not opt out for my 6th grader, even though he said he might want to for math, even though he is not sure as that is his strongest subject.
I casually asked this morning and he said, come on, mom, it was so easy. No big deal. lol.

Re: If your child took the test how did they find them?

Honestly I have been very low key about the tests at home - never talk about them just a quick good luck in those tests today on day one and then a quick "how was it" when she got home. But she got herself completely frazzled and upset on day 2 when she was running out of time. I have never seen her so upset before. SHe kept telling me last night that she thought her head was going to explode and she couldn't see the words on the page as all she kept hearing was her teacher telling them how much time they had left. This was a true organic reaction to the pressure she felt there and then taking that test. No outside pressure from us, just my daughter against the clock and the material she was working with and she crumbled :(...from speaking to other moms of today it seems like she wasn't alone and a lot of the kids who we thought would breeze through it completely panicked.Chat Icon

Maybe it is easier for the older kids. My kids never really complained in any of the years taking it though.

The common core versions of these tests are relatively new, developmentally inappropriate, and made to be confusing in the elementary level. So your children probably didn't take the same versions when they were younger.

DD is in 5th grade and peforms above grade level. Tuesday's test she thought had interesting passages and easy questions, only 2 questions she didn't understand. Wed and Thurs she said time was tight and she only finished with 5 minutes to spare at the end and many kids were not finished at all.

I asked how was it? and didn't make it a big deal. He said easy all three days (he said the same last year and scored high). He's in 4th grade and does well in school so it was a typical response. He said day 1 and 2 were pretty easy and he finished with 20-30 minutes to spare. Today he said it was easy with one hard question that took him some time to figure out what they meant but then he think he got it in the end.

The fifth grade test was very responsible this year compared to the last two years. I think the test makers and playing with the passages to get a feel for what grade level passages look like and what grade level questions look like. The fifth grade test last year was brutal. This year was very fair.

Re: If your child took the test how did they find them?

DS (4th grade) felt good the 3 days. First day was the easiest because it was only multiple choice. He wasn't looking forward to the tests on the second and third day because of the writing, but he said he was able to complete them. I asked whether he thought the test was more difficult or easier than last year, and he replied that he didn't remember how was it last year Chat Icon Chat Icon
