If your child had an ABR Hearing test...
Can you tell me a little bit about it? Feel free to FM me if needed Dylan has been "diagnosed" (not really sure if that's the word) with hearing loss. To determine the severity, they are recommending an ABR test. I just wanted to know what to expect.
Thank you

Re: If your child had an ABR Hearing test...
sorry no help but
I have hearing loss in my left ear and been through so many hearing tests they are all a blur. I read up on this one because I didn't recongize it.
I guess I was too young to remember now. I read up a little and it seems they need to be awake and quiet. I know AJ's tests (the average ones) she sorta gets the 'feel' of it and is pretty quiet and still. As a matter of fact we have another one coming up in a few weeks. ha!
Good Luck!

Re: If your child had an ABR Hearing test...
DS has had 5 of these.
Not sure how old your son is, they older they are the harder it gets because they need to be really still/quiet/sleeping to get accurate results.
If they fuss, or move it is difficult to tell if the brain stem response is from the clicks of the test or from the movement.
Each test took 1-2 hours, depending on how cooperative DS was.
I will tell you, after the 1st ABR they told us he would need hearing aids but that it was a mild impairment. Every test since then the rests have improved-as they get more detailed results.
The last test was a sedated ABR done when he had ear tubes put in. Since he was under anyway, it made sense to do the test to get a full diagnosis.
They were able to get him in normal range on one ear and he registered a slight loss on the other. They said he probably will not need hearing aids but we need to see how he language develops. His language has not developed much since then (I don't think it is from the impairment though, but we may push for hearing aids just to cover our basis since language development is such a crucial thing at this age.)
In any case I hope the test goes well and that everything turns out fine

They do not need to be awake, but they do need to be quiet/still. sleeping is actually better.

Re: If your child had an ABR Hearing test...
Unfortunately, he will need to be sedated for the test. That is the reason they are doing this one. He has been through so many of the other tests and they have detected a hearing loss but have been, for the most part, inconclusive as to the severity.

Re: If your child had an ABR Hearing test...
Thank you CrankyPants. He is 2 (was 2 on 8/12). How was it when your DS was sedated? Can you walk me through the whole thing? Were you in the room during the procedure? How was he after he woke up? Do you think he "knew" what was going on or was it more like a good nap? Umm, anything else?

It was a little different for us because Owen was 9 months-so, he really had no idea what was going on.
He did okay with the sedation, the test went so fast because they didn't have to worry about other noises. Instead of 2 hours, it was about 30 minutes. They will be able to get all the details they need though, so no more guess work.
As far as waking up-we were prepared for a rough awakening. He was really fussy, seemed disoriented and groggy. He has a bottle (I imagine they'll want your LO to drink something, though not in a bottle). I think they do that to make sure they don't throw up.
DS was just really cuddly and fussy and tired for a while.
We were not allowed in the room-but it may be different for you because ours was in an operating room since we were piggy-backing off of his ear tube surgery. We were with him right up until they took him into the OR and as soon as they were done.
You son will be fine, it's pretty fast and honestly-I will take that 1 sedated ABR over the 4 non sedated ones where is was 2 hours of stress each time and getting only 1/2 the answers.
that it goes smoothly and your son gets the best results
Let me know of any questions.

Re: If your child had an ABR Hearing test...
Thank you, this was all very helpful. I am sure the surgical center will fill me in on all the specifics but it is nice to hear the "inside" details from a mom Dylan has had all the other tests and he just cries and cries. I think this is harder on the moms than on them in some ways though since we are the ones who will remember
