Beach Vacation - what precautions?

Hi everyone.

My wife is considered a "high risk pregnancy" due to these reasons:
1. age (late 30s)
2. we had DD only 1 year ago, and the CDC recommends 18-24 months between babies.

My wife is currently in the very early stage, we're not even supposed to mention it (shhhhh...)

But she is taking her best friend to Mexico for 3 days for a pre wedding celebration.

What precautions should she do?

1. Avoid drinking the water there (get bottled or juice or soda)

2. Avoid too much sun..?
3. Avoid swimming in the ocean..?
4. Avoid swimming in the pool..?
5. Avoid walking too much..?

Any advice would be great.
Of course, I'm the overly cautious one, she's more carefree.

Thank you

I wouldn't avoid anything except the water, depending on where you are. swimming isn't going to do anything neither is walking. As someone who has had 2 early losses, you can sit and do nothing and it can happen or you can be active and enjoy yourself and have a successful pregnancy. No matter what she does over this vacation, she shouldn't worry, nor should she feel guilty if something happens during it or when she returns, IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ANYTHING SHE DID ON THE VACATION. And screw her doctors labeling her high risk for her age and short timeframe between pregnancies (unless there were issues with her pregnancy with DD).

Drink bottled water for sure. Make sure the ice cubes are made with filtered water or ask for no ice.

Just stay hydrated. Avoid too much sun and stay in the shade mostly.
Get up and stretch and walk every hour or so on the flight.

Other than that have fun!!!! Could be her last relaxing vacay for a long time

When I went away while pregnant my doctor told me only drink bottled water. Don't use the ice. Don't eat any fresh fruit and veggies that are just wash and eat. Bananas for example would be OK.
Also don't use the hot tub.

First I would question any Dr that says you are high risk based on those reasons but you didn't ask that.....LOL

I just would avoid water...but also ice, frozen drinks (if she has a non alcoholic one). Anything that is made with water basically. Brush her teeth with bottled water. Other than that I was swimming in the ocean during my first trimester.

No precaution.
The pregnancy is super early, so her risk factors don't really apply.
Water depends on where in Mexico. In cancun, the whole tourist area is filtered water & you can drink tap (been doing it multiple times).

My aunt said her BFF's doctor did the same thing, because she was 40... like, really? The woman is healthy as a horse and has no issues!!!! They treated her like she had a deadly disease she said.

Lol

I got pregnant 9 months after DD was born. I'm high risk but definitely not because of that! It didn't even phase my Dr.!

When we had our first child my wife was mid 30s, and she had to take progesterone for awhile (which is standard with IUI I think). I asked why and was told "shes a high risk pregnancy due to her age"

Everything was done via IUI with injections (clomid did not work)

Having children less than one year apart, being in your 30's (early, mid or late), and/or being on progesterone are NOT things that would categorize you as high-risk at all unless there was a medical history that warranted it. Not sure why your wife's doctor told her that.

Personally, I avoid too much sun and drinking the water in Mexico when I'm not pregnant so I don't think she really needs to alter much.

Thanks for all the replies.
Have to run to CVS later this week to pick up sunscreen for her.

After reading online, the general consensus is to use a topical (but not a nano particle one) sunblock only.

I'm confused- what is a topical sunblock only?
Isn't all sunblock topical?

What everyone else said.

Just another... No hot tub... But that's standard for any pregnancy, not "high risk."

Plenty of ppl have kids one year apart. Not sure how the guidelines for 18-24 months come about unless it was a C-section, but even so, those risks wouldn't be until much later in the pregnancy anyway.

Enjoy!

>>I'm confused- what is a topical sunblock only?
>>Isn't all sunblock topical?

Topical in the sense that its not absorbed into the body as opposed to a sunblock that's absorbed. I think it just sits on TOP of the skin. Like those colored sunblock that skiers wore in those '80s movies.

I just pulled this quote from a website:
"Instead, use physical or mineral blocks, which are safer options. These are the ones made with either titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. "

ElizaRags35
>>Also nano particle?

One site I read said that the nano particle ones (I assume it means tiny particles) can become airborne easier and can be inhaled. And zinc oxide/titanium dioxide should not be inhaled by pregnant women.

Here's a quote:
"Just be wary of products that say they have micronized or nano-sized particles of zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which are smaller than a lot of the chemical molecules and might be easily absorbed into the body."

Fondue
>>Not sure how the guidelines for 18-24 months come about

I think the theory is that a woman's body isn't FULLY recovered for quite some time.
So with a less recovered body, the growing baby might not get all the nutrients, etc, etc...

Re: Beach Vacation - what precautions?

Oh yes. Physical sunblock vs chemical

I was just confused by topical - because I thought topical meant on the skin. As opposed to something you swallow.

I've actually never used physical before, but if that's safer, then I'll buy some for the wife to use.

and I made up "topical sunblock". Just meant "on top" as opposed to "(absorbed) inside the skin"

:)
