Crashing..if you used an ovulation kit
I used the cbefm so it told me when to start using the sticks. First 2 cycles its getting to know you so it has you start on CD6. Then Once it learned my cycles, it had me start around CD10-12. I had 35-40 day cycles

Re: Crashing..if you used an ovulation kit
For dc1, I did the clear blue monitor, and it told me when to start. For this pregnancy, I uses the sticks with the happy faces (forgot which brand-I had lost my monitor when we moved.). I have a 35-40 day cycle and the instructions told me to start on 18. I never got a smiley that month. The next month, At suggestions from the fertility board on this site, I started on day 13, and sure enough, got the smiley on day 14, and conceived that night!
I peed late afternoon/early evening (I heard somewhere that was the best time for those types of sticks...)
Best of luck!

Re: Crashing..if you used an ovulation kit
Thank you to both PP, but I'm a little confused. I got my period on August 14th so how do I know when to start using the test strips? If I test in the evening then don't I miss out on trying 2x that day? With DD we tried once and got pregnant so easy and now it's been 8 months and nothing. I'm frustrated and upset..I've never used these strips before so I want to make sure I'm doing it right. Thank you for responding.

What I like about the CBEFM is that you only test in the morning. Pee on the stick w/ FMU, put it in the monitor, and done. You start off with low readings, then it goes to high, and then when you're about to ovulate, it'll say peak. We would BD every other day while on high readings and then every day while peak (2 days) and then skip a day and BD one more day after.
I never used other ovulation sticks so I don't quite know how they work.
TTCing is a frustrating process. It took 2.5 years to have DD1 and then one time (like literally BD'ed once) to have DD2. Good luck!

Crashing..if you used an ovulation kit
I used the smiley face one. Think it's clear blue easy. It told me to start on cd 8 or 9. It says to use fmu so I did, but then I read that it's better in the afternoon so I started doing it twice a day. I never got a smiley face. Was so upset, thinking I didn't ovulate this month and was worried maybe I'm no longer fertile. Well... Now I'm 7.5 weeks pregnant! So I don't understand why it didn't work for me but it didn't. So if you get no surge all is not lost!

I didn't read all of the responses, so I don't know if I'm repeating what was already said, but wanted to answer in case not. I used the basic first response OPKs where you watch the lines darken until the test line is equal to or darker than the base line. I always started testing around CD10 (CD1 being first day of period) until CD16. (So for you that would be 8/23-8/29). Just once a day with FMU. I have a very regular 28 day cycle and usually ovulated on CD14, but sometimes it would be a little later and land on CD16. If I had extra OPKs in the house (each box only comes with 7) I would test twice on those days that I was sure I'd O, just to be sure. So always with FMU, but then again between 2-5pm after holding pee in and not drinking/eating for 2-3 hrs prior.
Every person varies. Some people don't get their surge with FMU, though I always did. For some people the smiley test is the only one that works, for others, it's the cheapo wondfo deals. This is just what worked for me. Try out some different methods and see what works for you. Good luck!!

1) the booklet with the kit tells you when to start based on how long your cycles are. For a typical 28 day cycle, it probably tells you to start sometime around day 10 (but look - I'm just guessing!), with day 1 being the day you first got your period
2) actually, I was told NOT to DTD too many times in a short period of time. My doctor suggested every other day. It takes the male a little while to create more sperm, so if the second attempt is really close to the first, it's basically "blank"
3) the smiley strips worked for me, but if it's taken awhile, the monitor may be more successful for you, as it gives you a bigger window and is more tailored to you.

Re: Crashing..if you used an ovulation kit
As for DTD, with DD I was able to get pregnant first try with no real effort at all. I did experience a few losses, but conceiving took very little work at all. With this one, however, it was more of a challenge. More losses again, but also went through at least a year of not conceiving at all which was insane. So i DEFINITELY understand your frustration!!! And this was with knowing exactly when I was ovulating and still nothing. Ugh. Anyhow, all this to say, what finally did work for me was a new method we were trying out in March. We basically DTD the night before ovulation (I already knew from the months prior exactly when I would be ovulating). I had hoped in doing this that the sperm would be settling into my body and hit the egg as soon as it dropped. Then we did it again the next night when I DID get my positive O, hoping if the last sperm missed or died off, this set would latch on now. After that, just for kicks, we threw it one extra night of lovin the day after ovulating. Figured it couldn't hurt at that point since ovulation was supposedly over, but who really knows what's going on in there, ya know? So it was 3 days in a row that we had tried (and that was after a week or so of not doing anything). Seemed to work for us because that was the month we conceived DS!
Anyway, I hope that helps. Worth a try.
