If you email your child's teacher ...

How quickly do they reply?

I emailed DS's K teacher on Wed afternoon (after school hours) and have not heard back.. It's been almost a full 48 hours. Is this the norm?

Granted, I'm not a teacher and have been a SAHM for the last few years but when I worked, I always responded to emails within one business day even just to say that I needed to do further research to give a complete answer.

Re: If you email your child's teacher ...

I will let you know soon- I literally JUST emailed DD's K teacher asking a question.

I know she can't reply right away because class is still going on and now it's the weekend- and a long weekend as well since we are closed Mon and Tues for Rosh Hashanha

But we'll see

Update- I emailed her at 2:25 pm.
DD came off the bus at 3:30 with a note in her folder from the teacher- answering my question.
Damn!
That was fast!!!

Is this NYC?

In my son's school they really do not like to email parents back. I was advised to call and speak to them or send a note.

The past two years (but not this one) the teacher used a program called class dojo and you could message the teacher, I liked that a lot.

No, Suffolk county. I will probably send a note. Thanks.

In the district where I work we are required to reply with 24 hours.
In the district my kids attend, teachers reply at their leisure. Chat Icon
If I don't hear back from them in 24 hours I email again and CC the principal. That always gets me a quick response.

My son's school (high school), sometimes takes days or weeks! There is no policy for them to check their email, and they don't very often!

My daughter's school, her teacher last year NEVER responded. This year the teacher responds quickly.

Your teacher may not be an emailer or maybe your email got sent to her junk folder. Send in a note and ask what the best method of contact with her would be.

Last year it was within 24 hours. So far this year, I had to email his teacher for 2 things and both times she has emailed me back within a few hours.

Re: If you email your child's teacher ...

I'd give her the benefit of the doubt...she could be out today, she could be having internet issues (this is so common with school just starting), or it could have gone to her junk folder...I'd call and leave a message or send a note.

Me personally, as a teacher, I email back quickly, but I check my email at home as well as at school.

I think this depends on the urgency of the matter. An email asking, for example, for recommendations for educational websites your kid can use at home, versus, for example, your kid is having anxiety about a social situation, please look into it and get back to me -- require different response times. The first should have leniency of a couple of days, IMO, whereas the second one should be by the next school day.

Re: If you email your child's teacher ...

Depends on the teacher - I find some teachers are very into email - usually the younger ones. I will hear back immediately and never later than the same day. My DS had one older teacher in her 60's and she was not good at email - she would get back to you but, sometimes with a phone call or note and email wasn't the best way to reach her if you wanted an instant reply. But, she was still my favorite teacher lol!

Right now, neither computer is working in my classroom. I am annoyed and refuse to respond to any e-mails until they have them up and running with a smart board. Fortunately none of my parents e-mailed me. Maybe she has no access to computer at work right now. It is possible! But really she shoudl have responded within 24 hrs.

Re: If you email your child's teacher ...

We were told at open school night that they read messages at 1:00 p.m. during their lunch and will reply back to us via email/note/phone call the same day.

I've emailed her twice so far and she's replied to both within a few hours, but she told us at parent-teacher night that she has a smartphone and that she tries to respond to messages during her breaks and prep times.

As a teacher, I always get back the same day or at the latest, the very next day. I check my email all the time from my phone so I reply nights/weekends as well.

My son's teacher only checks her work email right before school, at lunch or right after school. I emailed her the first day of school - in the late afternoon - and she got back to me early the next morning.

I'm a teacher and I prefer notes in the kid's folder. We can't check emails while the kids are in the room because we are teaching. I say send in a follow up note. I'm so busy planning and doing what needs to be done sometimes I just don't have a minute to check my emails.
