Re: Home birth

Birth is supposed to be a natural process. Women have been giving birth for centuries without hospitals. There are many reasons why women choose to give birth at home and none of them are for for reckless reasons. It is important to do your research and know your options. A good midwife will know how to handle all situations involved with birth. It is also important to have a birth plan and talk to a midwife to find out if you are a good candidate for homebirth (yes, there is a screening process.) Just like with anything in life, there are risks and benefits, but a homebirth can be a very rewarding and meaningful experience.

Not me. I am way too paranoid and I've seen way too many unexpected events happen right before and after birth so I prefer to be in a medical setting where if God forbid me or my baby need urgent care it is easily accessible.

Yes it's true that for thousands of years people gave birth in their homes but there were also a lot of people who died while giving birth in those days. IMO better not to take chances..that is what modern medicine is for.

That's mainly because people back then were not medically trained to handle those types of situations.

ITA with this...and honestly I think the use of Pitocin, Cervadil, and c-sections are all riskier than we allow ourselves to believe.

I'm not anti-hospital...I had 2 hospital births. But I also know several babies were successfully and healthily birthed at home (including one by accident!)

If you are low risk, with a great midwife and 5 minutes from a hospital , go for it. If you want natural birth in a hospital a supportive provider, staff and a doula. However, if you want to go natural always be ready for other possibilities. I really wanted a natural birth and I labored without meds for 10.5. However, I was stalled at 7 cm and decided to do the epidural so I could relax and progress. 6 hours later I gave birth vaginally without complication. No one ever pushed me into anything and all my wishes were respected.

And before women began giving birth in hospitals, death during labor was a VERY common issue. I ended up needing an emergency c-section, and I thank GOD every day I was at a hospital already. When something goes wrong, even just a difference of minutes makes the difference between life and death - for both baby and mommy. IMO, why take the risk?

Re: Home birth

Personally I wouldn't, but I won't judge somebody who does. I'm just way too anxious of a person, even after doing it 3 times, i don't think I'm any more prepared lol, each delivery was very different.

I would love a water birth though, but I've found only midwives who do them, and I won't ever allow a midwife into my birth room ever again. I had a very terrible experience with one and it's turned me off for good, regardless that they are all obviously different.

Re: Home birth

Had both experiences 1 in hospital ( unmedicated but with episiotomy at the end)1 at home with an outstanding midwife ( unmedicated no episiotomy or tears baby a full pound bigger). My (unplanned) home birth was immeasurably better physically , mentally and for the baby as well . If I had another I wouldn't give it a second thought, no comparison. I did have a typical low risk pregnancy both times. Do a lot of research and you have to be very comfortable with your " team"

Actually, maternal mortality rates in hospitals are rising in the US over the past 20 years. Our rates match those of some third world countries.

Obviously everyone has to make the best decision for their family. There is nothing wrong with either choice.

No. I had considered it when I was pregnant but thank GOD I didnt go with it. After my 2nd birth (and an uneventful pregnancy) *I* required immediate cardiac intervention that a midwife could not have helped with, at all. I had an entire cardiac emergency team rush into my room and thank god they were there within seconds. I shudder to think what would have happened if I had gone with the homebirth.
