Home birth
Thoughts? Has anyone had one? I saw a video of a home water birth on a Facebook group I'm in and I've been seriously considering it. DH isn't really on board but he's open to learning more about it.

Home birth
TBH, to me it's not worth the risk to my baby or to me. There are so many unknowns in a birth, and so many emergency C sections- I would want to be right there to save my baby's life or my own. Not have to wait for an ambulance and by that time it could be too late. Are hospitals cold and annoying? Yes. But a few hours/days of discomfort for me are only the beginning of the sacrifices I will make for my kids.

I wouldn't. I thought about it. I hate hospitals. I would love to birth at home. I chose the hospital because they have the equipment and staff there to provide emergency treatment for me and baby.

If your specifically looking for a water birth I believe LIJ not sure which manhassett or new Hyde park- I think manhassett has a pool for a water birth. When my friend had her son and we went to visit I passed by a room with a birth pool- not sure if it's still there or what not but doesn't hurt to call

A friend of ours did this and something happened that they didn't catch the night the baby was born. The baby had to be rushed to the hospital the next day, not enough oxygen was getting to the brain. She is pretty much brain damaged now. They can't say for sure why or how it happened, but I would never, in a million years, mess around with birth. Go to a hospital where there are machines and doctors.

Re: Home birth
My BFF did a home birth and unfortunately it didn't go as planned. Her son was born with some issues and they had to rush to a hospital, mind you, not the one they would have given birth at.
For all the preparing you can do, it's best to be around the resources that can help if something unexpected happens.
I'm sure there are millions of home births that are textbook and go smoothly, but you never know.
Some hospitals have more natural birthing wards where you can do a water birth or other methods, and work with your doula/midwife. It might be a good compromise if that's whats important to you.

I totally agree with this. Except for the hospitals are cold and annoying part. An OR is sterile, but a birthing suite is usually very nice! I delivered at "hotel" LIJ for my second and it was amazing.
Also, I really wouldn't want to have to clean up my house after a home birth! There's A LOT of blood and fluids!

Numc has birthing tubs now also. I know a few people who have had successful home births. Personally, after having my second under very scary circumstances and with all the parents I know who had the same I could never chance it.

I feel like we've come all this way in terms of medical equipment for a reason. Personally, I want it to be right there just in case something happens.

I had an awful experience at the hospital.. I will definitely be doing a home birth with my next. I've had 2 friends do them and they both had positive experiences. I think the key is finding a midwife and doula who are experienced and who you click with

I'm with you. I would never consider delivering anywhere without so much as a high level NICU.
OP, I think you need to do a LOT more research. Water births can be very dangerous (there's a reason doctors won't perform them) and they're doubly dangerous at home.

Read the book Midwives and you'll run straight to a hospital to deliver

Home birth
My neighbor did a home water birth that was very smooth. On the other hand, my sister's friend had a home birth and the baby died during birth because the midwife let her labor way too long without intervention. I personally wouldn't risk it, but if I were to do a home birth, I would make sure I knew every contingency plan.

This. This isn't 1885. No need to take that chance anymore when modern medicine is what it now is. I would never risk my own life or my baby's life when we live in a modern society with advanced medical care right at our doorstep

Of course they do, but why risk it???? Maybe if the baby was in the hospital it could have been caught, no one really knows.
To each his own, but I would NEVER, especially after having that happen to a friend.

Exactly. Hospitals can't save all babies just like they can't save all adults. But they are MUCH better equipped to handle an emergency situation there than a midwife in your living room.
You can be stabbed or shot and still die at the hospital, but you have a better chance of surviving if you get there rather than trying to treat it at home.

After going through actual labor and delivery that ended in CS, def not!!!!! Not for me. I don't see any benefits to a home birth. I guess your comfort, that's it.

I think it's a really bad idea personally. If I really wanted to go that type of route, I'd go with a midwife who delivers in a hospital. That said, I won't even go to a midwife, I want an OB.

Re: Home birth
I used both an OB & midwife: each has a set of skills.
No way would I deliver at home. 2 of my 3 kids needed immediate doctor level care (totally normal pregnancies).
I agree that it could be a great experience... But if it goes bad, the consequences of a few minutes without oxygen is catastrophic.

Re: Home birth
I thought about it briefly when I was pregnant with my DD because I wanted a natural birthing experience without unnecessary medical intervention. I decided to give birth in the hospital with a midwife and I am glad I did. First of all, I can't imagine having all that blood and fluid that came out in my house which would have to be cleaned up. Second, I had a wonderful pregnancy and ended up hemmorhaging after the baby was out because of internal tearing. I started going into shock and while my midwife was frantically trying to get me to stop bleeing, a whole swarm of medical personnel rushed in to give me oxygen, adrenaline (I think), blood and God knows what else. If I wasn't in the hospital, I am afraid to think what could have happened. I don't have a clotting disorder or any condition that would have predicted this would happen. I found out after that internal tears tend to bleed a lot and it can happen to anyone.
I am not trying to scare you but I think it's better to have other medical personnel on site just in case something happens. You could give birth in a hospital with a midwife who would be very open to a more natural birthing process. Some hospitals have pools to give birth in, birthing balls, etc.

Home birth
Never in a million years--there are too many variables that cannot be controlled during labor and immediately after delivery. I needed the piece of mind that if something went wrong me and my dd had the best possible chance for a good outcome. My dd was perfectly healthy but had trouble transitioning to breathing air- she spent a couple of hour being closely monitored in the nursery and ultimately did not require medical intervention but things could have gone much differently if she did not adjust.
