What the heck is finishing powder...and do I need it?
Someone explain it to me. What does it do? Where do you apply it? Is there a particular one you'd recommend?

You mean like a loose powder that goes over your make up?
Like Bare Minerals Mineral Veil?
I used to use it but I am not sure it did much and then it would just end up sinking into my pores and making them look worse.
I find less is more with bad skin.
But some people like it to absorb excess oil and "set" the make up

Supposedly. But I don't really see it making a difference.
It can be good, I guess, if you are more oily, it would perhaps absorb some excess oil etc

I use a BB cream and then a light "dusting" of a pressed powder. I don't know if that's what you're talking about, but I like the way it looks.

Traditionally, powders were used to hold make up in place & provide a matte fish. Now, some foundations are matter & long wearing, so you might not need it. Also, if you have dry skin, or prefer a dewy finish, you might not need it.
If you are putting powder products (like blush, bronzer, or highlighter) over your foundation, using powder first can help it blend more easily.
You can put it all over, or just under your eyes to hold concealer in palce, or just where you get shiny.
Powder can also be used throughout the day to touch up if you get oily.
Translucent powders just absorb oils & mattify.
Color correcting powders, are similar to translucent, but add a barely noticeable tint that counteracts other colors ( green for redness, etc)
Skin tone powders add color, which can make your makeup a little more opaque. This is also good if you aren't wearing foundation, or if your foundation wears off & you need to touch up.
Powder foundations are heavier, and meant to be worn alone, but i you want' very full coverage make up you can wear them over foundation. You can also use them to touch up if your foundation wears off, because they provided more coverage than skin tone powders.
Loose powders tend to go on heavier than pressed powders, but it depends on the particular powder & the brush you use.
