TESOL as an additional teaching certification

hi All

I am taking the classes as the pathway for "additional teaching certificate" to get my TESOL. I am enrolled in a cohort through Dowling College and am getting it done in a year.

I am getting conflicting information on the language requirement. I know I need 12 credits. NYSUT told me the same language (but I know their program is with mercy college and that's a mercy college requirement)....

Dowling told me 12 credits of any language and you can count other languages (spanish, italian, etc).

BOCES only told me that I am deficient in 3 credits of language and I can't get a straight answer.....

I can't get through to the state on the phone.

Anyone have any info? I would so appreciate it!

The only thing I can tell you is that many people in your position have the same conflicting confusion! My advice is to go to your teach account and do the checklist. Then, go to Dowling's certification office in person and have them call barbara M at the BOCES LI because she is the Guru. While you're standing there. If you're already a LI teacher, then you can literally get your Assistant Sup to call BOCES with you there to find out the truth. Good Luck!
