Q regarding 3 day embryos vs 5 day blasts
Something just dawned on me re IVF:
Let's say someone has 10 fertilized eggs make it to day 3 embryos. So the RE/embryologist lets them go to day 5 and 5 of them become blasts. Let's say they transfer 2 blasts, and then freeze 3.
My ? is why don't they freeze the other 5 that made it to embryos but not blasts? Granted, they aren't as strong or viable as the frozen blasts, but why don't they keep them as a backup, just in case the blasts don't work out?

Not sure I understand your question, but if 10 make it to day 3 embryos and 5 make it to 5 day blasts, it means that the other 5 either arrested between day 3 and day 5 or was a poor grade and considered low/not viable.

if only 5 of them made it to day 5, then it means the others arrested after day 3 and thats what is left.
i dont think they would purposely leave them out.

Some RE's will discard embryos below a specific grade. My RE discarded one of my blasts. It was a 4CF

I had 15 fertilize. A bunch still going on day 3- maybe 10ish and at least 5 or more still going on day 5. Transferred 2 and only 1 to freeze. The others that were still going weren't up to the standards and were discarded because they weren't of good quality. If I would have frozen on day 5 I would have had a bunch to freeze but they wouldn't of been good quality and most likely wouldn't of made it to a viable pregnancy. Luckily I had my son from one of the 2 transferred. Its insane how the number dwindles.

it really is insane how many will not be good. my friend had 30 retrieved. She put one back and froze like 9. the rest didnt make it. so thats more than half

Right? I mean I had 15 and most of them looked good on day 3. How did I only end up with 3??? Crazy! This was my best cycle with amount retrieved and fertilized so I was expecting way more to make it to freeze.

just goes to show you how getting pregnant on your own is so hard. if all these embryos arent good from the get go, I guess thats why the say you have a 20% chance in any given month when trying;
and why most end in miscarriage before a woman even realizes it. :(
