ceiling molding question- paint

My parents are re-doing their living room, and offered to give us their old ceiling moldings to put in our bedroom. They are beautiful moldings, but they are a dark wood color (White would match our room better). There's alot of detail to them, and they would be hard to paint after being installed. So, my husband and I were thinking about spray painting them before installing them..

Bad idea?

I wouldn't spray paint them - you need to give them a coat of white primer before putting them up. Or prime & paint them before putting up and then just do touch ups after installation.

There is a spray primer that I found, but it still seems risky! Worried about painting with a brush because it's dental molding and it's going to be very hard to paint.

I would leave them. While white may go- if they are old a very ornate you don't want to take away from it. Add some accents into the room to pull it together. I have a lot of very old vintage things through my house and somehow it all goes because I add in pieces to tie it all together

Prime and paint them before you put them up

I wouldn't worry about using a brush or having some brush marks or spots. It's on the ceiling - it won't be obvious.

We hand painted all our molding before putting it up. And then once up, we filled, sanded and painted over the nail holes. It's a PITA but well worth it in the end
