Perineal Massage
I don't think this has been discussed on this board in awhile so I wanted to bring it up and see if others are doing this. My doctor and pelvic physical therapist are both very pro-perineal massage so I have started doing it, especially as it's most effective for women having their first child and over 30.
I thought it was really weird at first, especially someone "teaching" me how to do it but I got over that quickly.

Re: Perineal Massage
I was going over my birth plan with DH last night and mentioned this after he asked me what an episiotomy was and he looked at me like I had 10 heads. Poor thing was overloaded with new words and phrases like lanugo, cradle cap, pitocin, effacement, vernix caseosa, delayed cord clamping, and many, many more. He was proud as punch that he knew meconium.
Sorry for the tangent... I was wondering about it though- I'll try anything. Can you do it yourself? I honestly have a hard time reaching and I'm not sure I can. Also, what do you use? Oils?

Perineal Massage
I didn't do it but my nurse at the hospital did. I appreciated her attempt but I still wound up with a bad third degree tear, which ironically was my #1 all time biggest fear of childbirth.

Yep, you do it yourself (or have DH help but mine was like, I don't think I can do this)! I have a guide with pictures from my PT but I saw some guides online too. For me, epidural, pooping on table, all of these things are fine with me but tearing and episiotomy scare the crap out of me so I'm going to do everything I can to avoid it! They say to start around 34 weeks a few times a week and build up to doing it daily at 40 weeks. It isn't that time consuming and if it's works, it's totally worth it to me!!
Funny how your DH was overloaded with these words! We have our childbirth 101 class tonight so I'm sure we will be in the same boat! I hope he survives!

My PT said you need to do it regularly for it to work--she had me start at 33 weeks and do it a few times a week now and then by the end, do it daily. So it doesn't sound like a one time go would work (though it was sweet of the nurse to try!).
I don't see results yet but when my PT did it for the first time she told me that I was pretty tight (TMI) and she could definitely see me tearing as is. So I certainly figure anything I do can't hurt, it could only help.

I'll have to google it... at home. Lest I get fired for my questionable searches. And same here- episiotomy and c-sections are my worst delivery fears. The birthing class did NOT help ease my c-section fears either. In fact, I think it made it worse!

Perineal Massage
You do not have to get an a Episootomy and I encourage you to refuse it. Your body was meant to birth a baby and it may tear in the process, but a natural tear will heal much more easily than a cut.

Perineal Massage
So perineal massage was brought up in my Childbirthing class last night. The instructor is a L&D nurse at the hospital I'm delivering at and she said it absolutely works. Yes, it's not 100% of the time but she's seen a lot of babies delivered and thinks that it has helped women to have less severe tears. Hey, if it can prevent me from a 3rd or 4th degree tear, I'm all in!
