Does anyone have this system and if so, can you recommend who you used for installation?
They seem like they are very similar to regular wall units but much more expensive. What are the benefits?

They are more energy efficient that a window/ wall unit. They are quieter. They have a unit that hangs in the wall and a condenser unit that is outside. Super easy install.
A good option if you can't run ductwork. You can also get them win a heat pump so you can use it for heating.

Re: mitsubishi ductless air conditioning
We used Jack Benger HVAC- had the best price quote. I love the units - extra heat on a cold day and they were great for AC in the summer. He advertises here on LIF.

We have a Fujitsu system and had it installed by Universe. It works so much better to cool the house than the wall units. And we use it for a little bit of heat when it's cold before we turn our regular heat on.

Re: mitsubishi ductless air conditioning
We have mitsubishi and we used Apple Air Conditioning from Seaford.
They are so much better and so different than a regular wall unit. The are super quiet, you don't hear anything. the cool faster, they can also heat or just use dehumidifier setting. The are way more energy efficient.
We did it in our basement for AC and heat. a few years back. then last year we added a split unit, so we have another outdoor unit feeding a unit in the living room/main floor and one in our master bedroom. It has been so much better than the wall units we had and for us is a much better option than central air.

Does anyone have ballpark numbers on cost? We know we need these and want to plan for them!

Re: mitsubishi ductless air conditioning
We were charged with Jack Benger HVAC 6k for our two units- they heat and cool our whole downstairs- but I am guessing it depends on the size of your home and the area you need to cool.

Re: mitsubishi ductless air conditioning
Is it expensive or less money then having central air installed? I hate, HATE our wall units but I'm also not ready to drop $10K on central air. Wondering if this is a cheaper alternative. Does it cool well? I like a cold house in the summer months.

Stupid question--if you have units for the downstairs, what do you do in the bedrooms?

We have one larger unit that cools off the whole first floor. Then a smaller unit in each of the bedrooms upstairs.

The units are 3K each and you need one in each room. I guess if you have an open floor plan, you can get by with one unit, but for bedrooms you would need individuals. It doesn't seem much cheaper than traditional central AC, but I think it's easier to install.

we did mitsubishi with Apple too.
we love it. super quiet, super efficient. both cools & heats.
we have had everything else in our prior homes, and this is our favorite above all.
we have 1 compressor outside & a unit in each room.

Ouch. That would probably mean 5 units, we don't have an open floor plan and need 2 downstairs and 3 upstairs. 15k for just the units? Oh well, probably not in the cards anytime soon.

Re: mitsubishi ductless air conditioning
I know two people who have them. They are very quiet but they both have stated they don't cool as well as the old wall units did.

Re: mitsubishi ductless air conditioning
It is actually more expensive to install than central, but easier to install and more energy efficient. And you don't lose attic and closet space for ducts.
Also, you don't have to do the entire house. We did basement. Then we added another outddor unit to feed main floor and master bedroom. Our sons still have wall units. At some point we most likely purchase one more outdoor unit to feed units in each of their room on the other side of the house. So we did one in 2012 for $3k, spent $6K in 2015 for another and who knows when we will do the other one. But we were able to space it out and not suck up the cost all at once.
And we think it cools great. You can control each room. You always have certain rooms that are cooler or warmer with central air cause multiple rooms are on the same thermostat, with this, each room/unit is set at its own temp.
