Cat advice
Anyone have any humane ways to keep cats out of your yard?? My neighbor is a "cat lady" and feeds numerous strays as well as having several cats that are her "own" outdoor cats...they are constantly in my yard, sleeping on my deck furniture, pooping all over my yard, having babies under my deck and shed...I'm tired of it and need to keep them out of my yard! I don't want to hurt them, but I don't want them here! Help!

Cat advice
I was going to post this today too!!! Do we live around the block from each other?! I have the exact same issue plus we have a dog who had eaten cat poop a few times and gotten sick. They have also destroyed a piece of furnature outside in my yard by sitting there every night and peeing on it! I can't take it. I actually thought about calling the town shelter to see if they can take some of these cats

I don't really see what you can do; some cats live outside. Maybe you can put covers on your furniture if you are worried about them damaging the pieces.

I remove my cushions but they lay on everything...and honestly, my kids shouldn't have to step in cat poop every day so that my neighbor can feed her obsession...and it is an obsession, as confirmed by her husband when she is in my yard trying to get the newborn kittens into the cat carrier from underneath my deck. And yes, I have put up lattice to deter them...how much should I have to do to deter her animals from sheltering in my yard??

Call the town and see if there is something that they can do. Outside of that I would speak to the neighbor and let her know the issue but I'm not really sure that is going to help the situation.

I know the town (Brookhaven) won't do anything...she claims she tries to get them spayed/neutered, but if they keep having kittens, I'm not so sure that is true. I just cleaned cat poop out of my kids' playhouse today (eww)!

Has anyone tried lemon or orange oil? I heard that it is a deterrent when applied in a diluted solution to the yard, but it isn't cheap and I want to be sure it will actually work. I've also heard about some sort of high pitched noise machine also. Any ideas??

I would call your local aspca and see if they can spay or neuter the cats. Then I would tell the husband of your neighbor if she does not stop, you will be forced to call the police because she is creating a public nusciance. You can also put up a fence. You can put wires under it to prevent the cats from digging into your yard.

Wow this would piss me off so much since I'm allergic to cats. I would first talk to your neighbor and express your frustration. She needs to figure out how to keep her outdoor cats in her own backyard. If that doesn't work, I would call the aspca since she obviously has a problem taking care of her own pets.

Her husband hates that she has so many cats, but doesn't seem to have any influence. Will the aspca really do anything? I can't say the cats are neglected, they just choose to hang out in my yard constantly. They climb my fence and jump over into their own yard. How does someone keep cats in their own yard when they are outdoor cats?

Cat advice
I just found out from my vet (a family friend), that a certain amount of cats is illegal in the town of brookhave. I forget the term she used but Inwould try calling. I am also town of Brookhaven and will be calling about my neighbor too.

It doesn't sound like the cats are poorly cared for, and we don't even know that the neighborhood has an illegal amount. The OP said that she has outside cats and the other cats are ferals.
Calling authorities could land these cats in a kill shelter.

Do you have automatic sprinklers? I'd turn them on anytime I saw the cats in your yard. Maybe after a few times getting wet, they'll move on!

I do...I saw something on the internet that is motion activated for small spaces (like gardens)...I'll try that for when I see them!

How do they get into your yard ? That is your first step in figuring out how to keep them out.

Water is a good deterrent. Turn your sprinklers on or hose them down (gently so as not to harm them). After a while they will remember and should stay clear.
You've also got to tell your neighbor to knock it off.
While she has good intentions by feeding strays, if she doesn't spay and neuter, she is just adding to the cat population. I'd hate to see them go to a shelter - most will be euthanized.
She is also creating a health hazard for your children when they wander into your yard. Her yard must be a mess too, maybe the town should inspect that if she doesn't clean it up.

They can climb over the fence...I watch them do it in and out of my yard from my kitchen window. I know that I can lock my backyard up like a fortress, but I really want something that I can put down that will deter them from stepping foot in my yard...they have pooped on my front mat before! I won't do anything that will harm them, like cayenne pepper, but I am really looking for a smell that they hate and will stay away from.

Vaseline on the top of the fence.
They won't be able to get a grip.
Black pepper works on the ground. I use it in my flower beds to keep the squirrels from digging.
Buy the big jugs in the dollar store or at BJs.
Just reapply after rain or watering.

I had this problem years ago at my old house. I can 100% understand your frustration. My yard was DISGUSTING from it. I researched natural ways to deter the cats without harming them. I had read to use chili powder. I sprinkled it all around the perimeter of my yard and it worked. I had also read that soaking rags in white vinegar was a deterrent. I had such a large area to cover that rags weren't really practical for me. In your situation, if all else failed, I would call the town and the ASPCA. There is no reasoning with people like your neighbor. They have 1,000 reasons why it's okay for you to have to suffer for the sake of the cats they care for. Nobody wants to see the cats placed in kill shelters but its not right that your family can't use your own yard that you pay thousands of dollars in property taxes to be able to enjoy.

Thanks! I ordered orange oil and a pump sprayer and I will try that first, but I am saving all of your ideas to try if that doesn't work.
